Edward Sapp Obituary

Edward W. Sapp

Old Bridge

Edward W. Sapp of Old Bridge died Saturday, February 21, 2015 at his home with his loving and devoted wife Agnes by his side. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in December. He was predeceased by his father, Edward (1957) and mother, Inez (1997).

Ed was born in Dover, NJ and raised in Denville, before moving to Old Bridge, NJ 50 years ago. Ed was an athletic and academic standout and was salutatorian of his Rockaway High School graduating class. He served in the Korean War from 1953-1956 as Staff Sgt. in the Air Force. He attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology and graduated in 1960 with a degree in civil engineering. After working for Dupont, Witco and Amerada Hess Corporation, he founded and was president of UNI Engineering Inc., Hightstown, NJ. From a small office with 3 employees, he built the company into 60 employees and 2 office buildings. He retired in 2003 and his son Ed now runs the company.

He was a member of Chi Epsilon, American Legion 72 of Old Bridge, Nation Fire Protection Association, American Society of Civil Engineers and a long time member of Forsgate Country Club. Ed was an avid golfer and reader - especially of American history - and a model ship builder.

He will be truly missed by all who knew him. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren life stories and life lessons and kept a captive audience when sharing his wisdom. His family enjoyed his company and loved spending time with him either in Old Bridge or summers at Long Beach Island. He also enjoyed family and friends at the Pocono Mountain House, where he enjoyed hiking, swimming, outdoor cooking, sledding and fun times.

In addition to his wife Agnes, he is survived by his son Edward J. Sapp and wife Daria of Monmouth Junction, NJ, daughter Stephanie Walkowski and husband Dr. Edward Walkowski of Dalton, PA, son Jason and wife Cindy of Ewing, NJ, sister Joan and husband James Melchior of Chenago Forks, NY, grandson Dr. Brian Walkowski of Johnstown, PA, granddaughter Heather Walkowski of Blue Bell, PA, grandson Justin Sapp of Monmouth Junction, NJ, and many nieces, nephews. He also leaves behind a long list of good golfing buddies.

As per Ed's wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral services. Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the direction of Michael Hegarty Funeral Home, Old Bridge, NJ. Visit the funeral home website to share memories and extend condolences.

Dear Sapp family, My thoughts and prayers are with you and was sorry to hear about Mr. Sapp's passing. I will never forget our annual golf trips to some of greatest courses in the world with his son Ed and Brian Savage. We had a blast!! One of the highlights was playing TPC Sawgrass in a Nor'Easter. Mr. Sapp was extremely generous offering me work right out of college and hosting many rounds of golf at Forsgate. Will never forget our friendship and golf companionship. Rest in peace. Bob Schultz

Dear Agnes and family, Doug and I want to send you our love and sympathy. God bless you and give you His Peace at this time.
I want to add to all the wonderful memories that family and friends have sent in to honor and remember a very dear and special person. One of my fondest memories of you and Ed is when you were dating. I was around ten and visiting Aunt Helen and Uncle Joe's home in Rockaway with my parents. You both were downstairs playing a card game, I think and I felt very special to be with both of you. You were laughing and having such a good time and being so very much in love! I remember thinking how romantic it was and that you two were the happiest couple I had ever seen! I remember your December wedding and you looking beautiful in your white satin gown and all your sisters(my cousins) and friends looking lovely in their varied colored velvet gowns and matching hats. Ed will always be remembered with much love and admiration as he made everyone who knew him feel special and cared for. When I think of him I just see that fabulous warm smile and those sparkling eyes- so full of life and joy!

We were very sorry to hear about Ed's passing. Ed and Don took me under their wings when I first moved into the Arbor's and immediately became the fourth in their golf group. Ed also invited me to play on his senior basketball team. Not to leave out the wonderful Thunder Shower Invitational Golf Tournaments. Ed was truly a special person. God's graces to you all in this sad time. John & Diane

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sapp family for your loss. I first met Mr. Sapp playing basketball in Old Bridge back in the 1980's and he had one heck of a hook shot. Then I was fortunate enough to play many rounds of golf with the three generations of the Sapp's, Ed Sr., Ed Jr., and Justin and we always had a great time even in the winter months! RIP Senior, you will be missed but I know you are on the first tee in Heaven!
