HAROLD H. BRITTAIN
AGE: 98 BERKELEY
Harold H. Brittain, 98, of Berkeley, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at home. Born May 30, 1911 in Newark to Edward and Ethel Beet Brittain. He was raised in Newark and Irvington. During World War II, Mr. Brittain served as an air raid warden and other defense capacities in Irvington. During the 1930's, he managed the National Grocery Store in Irvington. In 1936, he married Mildred Erickson and they had two children, Robert E. and Marilyn M. (Midge). In 1943, he started working as a teller in the Citizen's Clinton Branch of Fidelity Union Trust Company, Newark, working himself up to Assistant Vice President of Personnel, retiring in 1972. During his service with Fidelity, Harold attended Dartmouth College for training and education. He also served as the president of the Essex County Chapter of the American Banking Association. He was very active in the 2nd Reformed Church in Irvington, starting as usher and moving on to deacon, elder and treasurer. Harold was a scoutmaster for Troop 218 at the church and was active in the Irvington district of the Robert Treat Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He also was an active member of the Masonic Fraternity and worked with the local DeMolay Chapter, a young men's Masonic organization. After his retirement, he and Mildred moved to the Silver Ridge Community in Toms River, where he became very active in the community and was involved in many committees. He also was a founding member of the Pinelands Reformed Church and was instrumental in purchasing the current church property and the planning of the original building. While living in Toms River, he remained active in Harmony Masonic Lodge. After the death of Mildred, he continued living in Silver Ridge, where he met his current wife, Winnie in November of 1992. They married in April of 1993.
Harold was predeceased by his dear brother, Stanton E. Brittain; and a sister, Irma Higgins. He was the beloved husband of Winnie Landsbergen Brittain and the late Mildred Erickson Brittain; devoted father of Robert E. Brittain and his wife Eileen of Hardy, Va., Midge Mangels and her husband Walter of Woodlands, Texas; three step-sons, Philip J. Logue III and his wife Linda of Roselle, Robert F. Logue and his wife Michelle of Middlesex, and Daniel T. Logue and his wife Bonnie of Staten Island, N.Y.; brother-in-law of Ann Landsbergen of Holland and Dave Landsbergen and his wife Pat of Columbus, Ohio; loving grandfather of Jennifer, Jeff, Kathy, Christine, Haley, Madison, Hunter and Michael; devoted great-grandfather of Kaitlin, Taylor, Matt, Kevin and Kelley. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at Pinelands Reformed Church, Toms River. Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of his arrangements.
