HARRY WALTER SCHMIDT
AGE: 82 HILLSBOROUGH
Harry Walter Schmidt, 82, died on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. He was born and raised in Kansas and moved to Hillsborough in 1975. Harry was an electrical engineer and had worked for AT& T for many years. In his spare time he was part of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1776 for 50 years where he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the Militia Black Powder Club, the Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead and the Hunterdon Flutterwheels Square Dancing Club. He also enjoyed wood carving and bowling.
He was predeceased by his son, Keith. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; his mother, Elsie; his sisters, Wilma Kay of TX, and Twylah and Judy, both of Kansas; his brother, Paul of TX; his sons, Ray and Harold; his daughter, Annette Smutko; and his 3 grandchildren, Kevin, Mellissa and Laura.
Graveside services will be Monday at 10:30am in Neshanic Cemetery, Hillsborough. Visiting will be Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 in the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Rt. 206, Hillsborough, NJ 08844. The family welcomes flowers and/or donations to The Boy Scouts of America Troop 1776.

My son and I met Harry years ago at the 4H Fair. He was always eager to share his wood carvings with us, teaching my son how he made them and making us smile and laugh. He was so talented, and answered all our questions with a gentle smile. We will miss him.

You will be remembered as one of my favorite people. It was such a pleasure having you around in Troop 1776. You were more then just a boy scout and a leader, you were a great man. Rest in Peace.

A legacy or legacies is what someone or something is remembered for or what they have left behind that is remembered, revered or has impacted current events and the present day. Harry's legacy is written in the minds and lives of the people, young and old alike, which he deeply touched. We are all better for having crossed his path and privledged to have joined him on his journey. May God bless you and your family Harry.

Your spirit will live on forever with every Scout from 1776 who has earned one of your many handmade awards and Eagle Ceremonies just aren't the same without you there to assist the boys in putting their names on the Eagle plaque so lovingly made with your own hands.
