James Mayor Obituary

James A. Failace Former Mayor

Carteret - Honorable James A. Failace passed at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick on December 31, 2020. Born in Jersey City he was the youngest son of Nellie(Bodino) and Fred Failace. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn and is survived by his brother, Frank.

Jim attended high school at St. Michaels in Union City where he played football. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He returned home and attended St. Peters College and graduated with a degree in accounting. He was later employed by H. Schultz and Sons in Union NJ as a comptroller which he enjoyed up until his passing.

Jim was a lector at St. Josephs Church, on the financial board, taught religion classes to the children for many years as well as the Carteret Specials on Saturdays. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Carey Council 1280, following in the footsteps of his father.

Jim was married to his childhood sweetheart Carol (Violante) in 1969 and they raised 3 wonderful children, Danielle (Gene), Matthew (Leigh) and Sherri (Rich). They were blessed with 6 beautiful grandchildren Rose, Anthony, Logan, Max, Mia and Miles, which Jim adored and will miss greatly. He enjoyed rooting for the Yankees, Giants and Rangers, but nothing could top his time with the family at the Wildwood beach.

Jim successfully fought the building of an incinerator in the town that he loved as a member of the organization Speak Out. He went on to become a councilman which eventually led to him being elected as Mayor of Carteret. He coached little league, girls softball, and Sportsman Football. He loved gardening and his garden rivaled any produce section of any supermarket.

He leaves behind many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who will miss him. Jim made lifelong friends and not just acquaintances. As Jim always said "I was born into a great family, I married into a great family, and I have a great family".

Funeral will be on Monday, January 4, 2021 starting at 9:30 AM at Synowiecki Funeral Home, 56 Carteret Avenue in Carteret. Mass will be at 10 AM at St. Joseph RC Church in Carteret, followed by Entombment at Holy Cross Mausoleum in North Arlington. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, from 2 PM to 6 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carteret Specials, 93 Ash Street, Carteret and St. Joseph Church, Carteret. A Celebration of Jim's life for friends and family will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Failace was not a good man, he was a great man. He never met anyone without an inviting smile and a good laugh. I remember him fondly growing up over the years as he was a fixture at school, church, games and made everyone feel welcome. He’s a shining example of what it is to live a good life, one filled with kindness and charity. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Failace and family.
