Dear cousin JoAnn and Family; I am so very saddened by the news of your dad's (my "uncle Joe") passing. I got a lump in my throat when you told me, as he meant the world to me. I always thought that he was a shining example of what is good about mankind; friendly, warm and kind, honest, generous and always helpful ... a person who comes to mind when one thinks of the saying that "one man can make a difference". Although he was of small physical stature, he had a HUGE HEART. I will always remember the conversations we had when he and Rose would attend a union event at one of the local resorts near where I live, inviting us to dinner, which gave Mary and I the opportunity to watch Rose and Joe glide across the dance floor. They were quite the pair. I miss and will mourn them both. My prayers are with you and with your family. Remember to keep your chin up ... As you said; he is going home now to be with his large family. I hope that his memory will always bring a smile to your face.
I would also like to thank him for his service to our country in battle overseas during WW2. In tribute to your dad (and of course Uncles Frank and Jim who were with him 'over there'), I'll include the poem "A Soldier Died Today", in a separate entry. (It's long). Your dad was part of that "Greatest American Generation", who were ordinary people, who accomplished extraordinary feats during their lifetime ... the likes of which may never be seen again. God speed, uncle Joe.
