(Courier News)

JOSEPH SZYMANSKI
AGE: 89 FORMERLY OF MANVILLE
Joseph Szymanski, 89, of Johnson City, NY died at Hilltop Campus, Johnson City, on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Szymanski; his 9 siblings, Constance Gasiorowski, Josephine Bonislawski, Katie Knitowski, Helen Zvolanek, Sophie Weidlich, Mary Weidlich and their spouses, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Florence and Stanley Niemiec. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Adeline and 5 children, Susan (William) Peterson of Vestal, and sons, Joseph (Carol) Szymanski of Brick, NJ, Timothy (Laura) Szymanski of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, Thomas (Sarah) Szymanski of Point Pleasant Boro, NJ, and Robert (Suzanne) Szymanski of Glenville, NY; 3 brothers, William, Ted, and Walter Szymanski. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, Sarah Peterson (Ash Warren), and Katie Peterson, Joe and Kristen Szymanski, Teddy Szymanski, Tommy and Jackie Szymanski and Adam and Jean Szymanski. His great grandson, Henry (Hank) Warren also survives him. He also leaves behind many much loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe grew up in Manville, NJ, where he acquired the nickname "Butch" and lived through the hard times of the 1920's and 1930's. He served in the Army Air Corps as an MP in the states during World War II. He lived and worked for the greater part of his life in Rutherford, NJ, as a plumber, first working for others before striking out on his own and starting his own business. He was a true family man. His wife, children, grandchildren and recently his great grandchild meant the world to him. He enjoyed traveling with his wife through 48 states (regrettably missing Nevada and Kentucky), woodworking, bird watching and entertaining with his harmonica and corny jokes. He loved talking to people and quickly made friends upon moving to Hilltop from his home of 15 years in Endwell, NY only 5 months ago.
A memorial service will be held at Hilltop Campus, 286 Deyo Hill Road, Johnson City, NY at 2:30 Thursday afternoon. The family will receive friends at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main Street, Johnson City on Thursday evening from 6-8pm. Burial will be in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Wrightstown, NJ on Friday at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the CJ Foundation for SIDS, 30 Prospect Avenue, Hackensack, NJ 07601.

Uncle Butch was such a family treasure. I can remember as a child that he always made me feel so special. His great sense of humor and kind words never failed to make me smile. How lucky I feel to have had him as my Uncle Butch. ...Lorraine DeFillipo McCarty

Sue: Thank you so much for the information. I and my wife Dorothy considered your Dad and Mom as two of our Best Friends. When your folks lived in New Jersey we always looked forward to playing cards at their home. After they moved into Assisted Living your Dad called me and we had a very nice conversation remembering "Old Times" We talked about the difficulty of the Disease that both of our wives had. Even though I had not seen them since our attendance at one of the Nursing Reunions, I miss them both. Please accept my sincere condolences. Stanley Pauloski
