Kewal Sran Obituary
Somerset - Dr. KEWAL SINGH SRAN passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family.
Dr. Sran was a pillar of his family. He was a man of principle who set an example of dedication and compassion in both his personal and professional life. His difficult decision to leave India and immigrate to the United States enabled him to embark on a career as an academic and opened a world of opportunity for his family.
Born in Sarhala, Punjab, India, he moved to the United States in 1962 to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. He then embarked on a teaching career. He was a professor of mathematics at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho and at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi before moving to New Jersey in 1982, where he taught at NJIT, Newark, for 25 years before retiring in 2008.
Dr. Sran was predeceased by his wife, Amar Kaur Sran.
Surviving are his two daughters, Sarbjeet Kaur Sran and her husband, Robert Boyd, of Hickory, NC, and Parmjeet Kaur Chavez and her husband, Javier, of Boca Raton, FL; one son, Bhupinder Singh Sran of Somerset, NJ; his sister, Tej Kaur Bhatti of Toronto, Canada; grandchildren, Ramneek (Walter) Williams, Simranjeet (Simran) Sran, Steven Boyd, Sean Chavez, Kiranjeet Sran, Kelly Boyd, Gurpal Sran and Javier Chavez; and great-granddaughter, Raina Sran.
Dr. Sran's legacy will live on with his family and friends who love him dearly and miss him. Although we are sad, we are also celebrating his life.
Services will be held on Tuesday, November 20th. A viewing and Kirtan (hymns) will take place at 10:00 AM in The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Cremation will follow at 12:30 PM at Holy Cross Crematory, East Brunswick. Following the services, a Bhog ceremony and Langar (lunch) will take place at 1:30 PM at Central Jersey Sikh Association Gurudwara, 116 N. Main Street, Windsor, NJ 08561.
