AGE: 80 EAST BRUNSWICK
Dr. Malcolm Friedman died Monday, November 24, 2008, at Cranbury Center, Monroe Township. He was 80.
Born on the Lower East Side of New York, he resided in Stonington, Conn., and Palm Beach, Fla., before moving to East Brunswick two years ago.
Prior to retiring, Dr. Friedman was Assistant Dean of Education at Long Island University's Brooklyn, N.Y. campus. He had a long and distinguished career with the New York City Board of Education, serving first as a teacher, then Assistant Principal and Principal, as well as Director of Reading for New York City Public Schools. He had also served as Adjunct Professor at both Hunter College and St. John's University in New York City.
A graduate of Townsend Harris High School, New York City, he completed his undergraduate studies at New York University, Manhattan, received a master's degree from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y., and a Doctor of Education from Yeshiva University, New York City.
Dr. Friedman was past President of the New York City Elementary Principal's Association (NYCESPA), and a member of the Council of Supervisors and Administrators of New York City, as well as the Academy of Public Education.
While at his Connecticut home he served as a volunteer at Mystic Seaport, and in Palm Beach he volunteered at the Moss Geriatric Center.
He was a gourmet cook.
Dr. Friedman was a member of the Bay Ridge Jewish Center in Brooklyn.
Surviving are his daughter, Marci Carestia and her husband Patrick of East Brunswick; daughter-in-law, Wanda Ortiz of Staten Island, and two grandchildren, Allison Carestia and Richard Friedman.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, Cranbury Road at Evergreen Boulevard, East Brunswick.
