Listen to a car negotiation between Norbie & an economically challenged young teacher (me) driving a clunker. Norb: "I got a new car, go look at my old one. " Fred: "I'll give you $300." Norb: "How about $100." Fred, lol "Deal!" Thanks Norbie. You are missed.

My Condolences to Coach Smith's sons Brian and David and their families. It was a privilege knowing Norbie and his lovely wife Carol. Years ago we had many good times together. I was proud to have known Norbie as a trustworthy friend and respected him as a fellow coach. Rest In Peace. Pat Dineen

Saddened to learn of Coach Smith passing. We never said Norbie to his face . To me it was a term of endearment. My football coach throughout HS. He was tough but not mean. I can still him saying get lower Field you can't block anyone standing up. Always drove a black Rambler station wagon. Very proud of his South River roots. I remember Coach as a kind and decent man who positively touched so many young people. God speed Norbie, thank you for being a there for me .-

So sorry to hear. Rest In Peace Coach Smith and thank you for being a great math teacher and coach. Still can hear you calling me Irish and motioning to the board to do a math problem or yelling at me on the track from the baseball field! You were a unique man and teacher in the crazy world of high school.-Kara Walsh-Lefeber

My baseball coach as a freshman and the my varsity coach my final two years on the varsity . We were losing in the bottom of the 7th 1-0 in a county playoff game . The first batter walked and i walked over to coach and asked him should i bunt. His reply was .",I'm not the one playing the game your guys are "You know how to play the game. . Be yourself and Play your game and we will win "We won 2-1 .After the game he said "see i was right now go enjoy the win with your teammates ". He let us play the game the way we were all taught growing up The number 1 advice he gave me "Control yourself and you'll control your future" Thanks Coach

I was one of the team managers for Mr. Smith for the 1981 freshman Sayreville baseball team. Mr. Smith gave me the chance to earn my first ever atheletic letter. When he presented the letter to me he did it during study hall (he was the teacher) and shook my hand. I always believed he purposely did this"publicly" so that other kids would see it and maybe have a bit more respect for me and my accomplishment. A thoughtful and classy move for a true gentlemen and something I will always remember. Rest in peace Mr. Smith and God bless your family.
