DR. PETER NEIL BARRY
AGE: 69 LANCASTER, SC
Dr. Peter Neil Barry, 69, of Lancaster, SC, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at his home. He was born December 19, 1940 in East Orange, NJ, the son of the late William Edward Barry and Cecilia Mary O'Shaughnessey Barry and was the husband of Mary Lorraine Johnston Barry. Dr. Barry was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at the University of South Carolina - Lancaster and former Academic Dean and Department Chair of History. Dr. Barry received his undergraduate from Seton Hall University, his Masters from The University of Maine at Orono and his Doctorate from Wayne State University. He was an active member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, serving as Usher and on the Prison Ministry Team and had formerly served on the Parish Financial Council, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Dr. Barry was very active and untiring in his service to this community; he was currently serving on the Lancaster County School Board, CareNet, Discovery School Advisory Board, Lancaster High School Improvement Council, and former Facilitator of the Teaching American History Grant and was the former President of the Mental Health Association.
Dr. Barry is survived by his wife, Mary Lorraine Johnston Barry of the home; two sons, Shaun Barry and his wife Kristen of Rockville Centre, NY, Brendan Barry and wife Francine of Blythewood, SC; two daughters, Bridget B. Francis and husband Justin of Indian Land, SC, and Megan Barry of Chicago, IL; five brothers, Brian Barry of North Brunswick, NJ, Shaun Barry of Somerset, NJ, Kevin Barry of East Brunswick, NJ, Kelly Barry of Freehold, NJ and Kerry Barry of Dayton, NJ and five grandchildren, Karah, Erin and Mary Margaret Barry and Mia and Sophie Francis.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Barry was at 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at St. Catherine Catholic by Father David Runnion. Burial followed at Lancaster Memorial Park. The Family of Dr. Barry Recited the Rosary and held a Vigil Service at 3:30 pm and received friends from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday, September 6, 2010 at Hartley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, suggests memorial contributions be made to Barry Family Scholarship at USCL, PO Box 889, Lancaster SC 29721 or St. Catherine Catholic Church.
