AGE: 94 • Brick

Ruth N. Samuel, 94, of Brick, passed away Monday, March 9 at home. Born in West NY, NJ, she lived most of her life in Point Pleasant before moving to Brick in 1998.

Daughter of John Christian Niesen and Florence Catherine Tangeman, she was predeceased by her husband, Cmdr. Edward L. Samuel, USCG retired and her son Walter H. Samuel. Surviving are her daughters Bonnie Kroll and her husband Jeff of Rumson, Peggy Staab and her husband Ray of Brick, four grandchildren M. Cassel Kroll and his wife Wendy, Stephen Kroll and his wife Terra, Katy Kroll and Betsy Kroll and one great- grandchild Beatrice Ruth.

Mrs. Samuel graduated NY University of New Paltz, 1942 BE and was one of the first women inducted into the US Coast Guard SPARs serving 1943 to 1946. A charter member of Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, she is one of the female WWII veterans featured at the memorial in Arlington. Mrs. Samuel taught second grade and substituted at Point Boro Elementary School for several years before retiring. She volunteered for the American National Red Cross at Fort Monmouth and at the Point Pleasant Hospital Thrift Shop. She was a loving and supportive mother and grandmother and had a deep compassion for all animals. There will be a private family service. Please make any contributions to Animal Care Sanctuary, PO Box A, East Smithfield, PA 18817. Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of arrangements.
