Sylvia Tobrowsky Rabinowitz

AGE: 99 • Long Branch

Sylvia Tobrowsky Rabinowitz passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 24, 2013 at her home in Long Branch, New Jersey at the age of 99. Sylvia was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey on February 1, 1914.

Sylvia graduated from Trenton State Teacher's College in 1935. She married her loving husband, Dr. Isadore Rabinowitz, in 1937. She and Iz enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. Sylvia taught elementary school in the Woodbridge Township Public Schools for 27 years while her husband, Iz, practiced dentistry also in Woodbridge where they raised their two children Billy and Perrisue. Sylvia was a long time member of Adath Israel Synagogue in Woodbridge, B'nai B'rith and a lifetime member of Hadassah.

In 1973 Sylva and Iz retired to Long Branch, New Jersey where Sylvia spent the last forty years of her life. She and Iz split the year during retirement between Long Branch and Lake Worth, Florida. Sylvia will be remember for her positive outlook on life, her incredible commitment to family, and her musical talent with her violin that she played for more than 90 years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her father William Tobrowsky in 1942, by her brother Lester Tobin in 1970, by her mother Lillian Rossner in 1991, by her husband Dr. Isadore Rabinowitz in 1993, and by her son, William E. Rabb, earlier this year. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Perrisue Silverstein of Princeton, New Jersey, by her son-in-law Dr. Victor Silverstein of Princeton, New Jersey, by her daughter-in-law Ellen Rabb of Warren, New Jersey, by five grandchildren, and by sixteen great grandchildren.

In fond remembrance of a wonderful teacher. Mrs. Rabinowitz was our favorite substitute teacher in School #1. I remember her well and how kind she was to all the children. I was one of them (1946-49).
