Virginia Tegnazian Obituary

Virginia Tegnazian

formerly of Tinton Falls

Born Virginia Anna Kerrian, September 25, 1929 in East Orange, New Jersey; passed away Friday, July 1, 2011 in Santa Monica, California. Ginny grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and was a graduate of Weequahic High School and the Washington School for Secretaries in Newark. Ginny loved people—she made friends easily wherever she went, and kept in touch with a wide network of friends and family of all ages and occupations via letters, emails, birthday cards and anniversary cards. She was smart, super-organized, loving and generous, a great cook, and always a great listener. Her warmth and encouragement, her ready smile and kindness, will be long remembered by the many people whose lives she touched. In 1950, Ginny married Bob Tegnazian of the Bronx, New York. They lived in Newark until 1956, when they bought a house in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Ginny was secretary to the principal of Monmouth Regional High School in Tinton Falls from 1961, when the school opened, until her retirement in 1986—a job she loved, where no two days were the same. Bob and Ginny were the proud parents of two children: their daughter Terry, a graduate of Brown University and Yale Law School; and their son Tom, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and the University of Virginia School of Law, who died tragically young in 1980. In 1993, Bob and Ginny moved to Los Angeles, where they settled in Westwood. Bob passed away in 2008, after nearly 58 years of marriage, and was deeply missed by Ginny. Bob and Ginny were parishioners of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Westwood, where Ginny was an active member and Secretary of the St. Margaret's Guild. She was also an associate member of the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club, where Bob had been a member.

Ginny is survived by her daughter, Terry Tegnazian and son-in-law, Scott Whittle; her sister, Helen Selverian of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Julie Tegnazian of Hartsdale, New York; and a large and loving extended family on the East Coast. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and family on both coasts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Thomas Tegnazian Memorial Scholarship Fund, in memory of Virginia Tegnazian, and sent to the University of Virginia Law School Foundation, 580 Massie Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Virgina was as close to perfect as any human being could get. Before Monmouth Regional hired its first regular principal in early 1962, Virginia practically ran the school herself from the General Office. She was, coming as no surprise to anyone, a member of the few and the proud people, who made up the Frank L. Weinheimmer elect!

I was first, a student in the class of 1966, and later returned to teach from 1979 to 1988 in the fine arts area. My experiences with Ginny were always positive ones and I am very sorry for this loss.

I have to say that she could operate an old-style switchboard, like an absolute pro. Also, when little Tommy was on split session at Sycamore School, he would come to work with mom each day working as an errand boy and office assistant. Eight-year-old Tommy was the one who named the school newspaper: The Falconaire!

Great memories of an even greater person, Virginia A. Tegnazian, who died on this, the Fiftieth Anniversary of Monmouth Regional High School.
