Gerald Gunster Obituary

Dr. Gerald Donald "Gerry" Gunster, 79, passed away in Northern Virginia on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, on Dec. 13, 1936, to the late Dr. Herman "Cy" and Ann McGuire Gunster.

Gerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Janet "Jan" Cooper Gunster, who passed away in June 2012.

Gerry had many proud accomplishments in his life, the greatest of which were his four children, Donald Gunster, Duxbury, Massachusettes, Christopher (Belinda) Gunster, Pelham Manor, New York, Ann Gunster (Tom) Finan, Ashburn, Virginia, and Gerald (Kristi) Gunster II, Bethesda, Maryland. Gerry was a devoted "Papa G" to his seven grandchildren, Eamon and Maggie Finan and Brennan, James, Julia, William and Anna Gunster.

He graduated from Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, in 1954, and Haverford College, Haverford, in 1958. He received his medical degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, in 1962 and was married the same year. After conducting his internship and OB residency at Misericordia Hospital, Philadelphia, he then practiced medicine at Norfolk Naval Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia, from 1966 to 1968, as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

Being the proud sixth generation of Gunster men to live in the Wilkes-Barre area, he then returned home with his wife and four small children to the Wyoming Valley and opened his OB-GYN practice, where he spent the next 32 years bringing thousands of babies into the world. He was a dedicated physician, a loyal friend, a devout Catholic and a devoted sports fan of all Philadelphia teams.

A Liturgy of the Word service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Robert Bellarmine Parish at St. Aloysius Church, 143 Division St., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Richard J. Cirba will officiate. Interment will immediately follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to time of service at the church. A lunch reception will follow at the Westmoreland Club, Wilkes-Barre.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., Shavertown.

I will be out of town and unable to do this personally. I am a 3rd cousin to your Father, whom I met, along with your Mother several years ago. I am on the Mcguire/Delaney side of the family, Actually, I had the great pleasure of knowing your grandparents, the Gunsters, was in their home on Lee Park Ave several times, and remember fondly, how my Father, Edward, loved your grandmother, Ann who was his 1st cousin, being truly a sister to him. I hope the legacy both your parents left and the love and affection and life experience they shared with you all over the years, along with God's grace, permits you to find some solace at this most difficult time.

May Dr Gunster rest in peace. He has been through a lot over the last several years, but always showed his optimism every time I had seen him. I had worked with him in the OR years ago, and he was a fine surgeon with so much empathy for his patients.
May your memories give you comfort.

Dear Don, Chris, Ann and Gerry
I am very saddened to learn of your father's death. He was a fine man, doctor and friend. We spent so many hours together in the office, the O.R. and socially. I know how sad he was without his beloved Jan and how fortunate he was to have all of you to help him and support him.At long last he will be united with Jan. I am so very sorry not to be able to be there with you and at the service; I am living in Florida but will be thinking of all of you in your sorrow.

My deepest condolences to the entire Gunster family. Dr. Gerry delivered my middle daughter Maura ironically 33 years ago on the day he died, a sunny Sunday in 1983. I remember vividly he had tears in his eyes raising Maura up to be put on the scale and that just validated what a wonderful caring man he was. He really appreciated the power of what he did and he did it very well. May God greet him at the gates with a great big hug and may his legacy of religious devotion and caring live on forever. So glad that he blessed our family.
