Anne Simmons Obituary
Anne was born on July 8, 1933 at home in Laurel Springs, NJ, to the late Clyde and Lilla Hickman. She graduated from Haddon Heights High School in 1951 and on February 1, 1962 married her husband of 59 years, Thomas Britton Simmons. Anne was a dental hygienist before joining the Bell Telephone Company as a supervisor, where she worked until her retirement in 1962. She was an avid volunteer with the Red Cross, Republican Women's Club of Kent County, clerked at Ellen's on High Street, and worked as a part-time real estate agent. On the weekends, Anne enjoying helping with her sons Christmas Tree Farm planting seedlings in the spring and decorating wreaths during the busy December season.
Anne was fond of many outdoor activities such as; fishing, crabbing, gardening, long walks on the beach and the ocean. With a love for crocheting, knitting, and sewing, she made everyone in her family Christmas stockings and sewed all her daughter's prom dresses. When she wasn't spending time with grandchildren or tending her herb garden, she solved many crosswords, Sudokus, and loved reading on her front porch.
In addition to her parents and late husband, who preceded her in death in 2021, she is predeceased by her brothers: Clyde, David, and Fredrick Hickman, and her sister, Dorothy Strater.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Sara "Sally" Bitter, her son, Andy Simmons (Donna), grandchildren: Brandon Bitter, Daniel Bitter (Stephanie), Ryan Bitter (Nevada), Nathan Simmons, and Danielle Simmons, and great-grandchildren: Bella, Merritt, Alexandria, and Grayson.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 24 at 11:00 am at Christ I.U. Cemetery in Worton, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Compass Regional Hospice at 160 Coursevall Dr. Centreville, MD 21617 or to the Animal Care Shelter of Kent County at 10168 Worton Rd. Chestertown, MD 21620.
