Madeline Rich Sparre

1918 - 2022

It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Madeline Rich Sparre. She was born on November 23, 1918 in Rock Hall, MD and was the daughter of Leonard and Louise Rich, who were lifelong residents of Rock Hall. It was here that she developed her passion for gardening, baking and the beauty of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Madeline was married to the late Robert H. Sparre for 53 years and they spent the majority of their years together in Kent County, owning and restoring a number of historic homes, including Jacobus Creek Farm in Still Pond and Brampton in Chestertown.

Madeline was beautifully talented in the kitchen and made sumptuous meals and baked goods for her friends and family. She was known to surprise many friends and neighbors with her homemade desserts, especially her 7-layer chocolate cake. She was also a brilliant gardener and spent many hours meticulously creating her colorful landscapes. For the past five years Madeline spent most of her days at her dining room table, creating stunning artificial flower arrangements that she donated to local area nursing homes to brighten the days of residents. At the time of her death, she had created over 3000 floral decorations. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Along with her parents she was preceded by her husband Robert H. Sparre, sister Hilda Rich Jewell and a son in law Paul Damico.

Mrs. Sparre is survived by her son, Karl Sparre and his wife Kathy of Southborough, MA; her daughter Trina Damico of Wilmington, DE; granddaughter Nina Sparre of South Bend, IN; grandson Christopher Vaillant and his wife Julie of Holliston, MA and 2 great grandchildren Brooke and Connor.

A private service will be held at the Christ I.U. Cemetery, Worton, MD. Arrangements by Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, Galena, MD
