Carl Butterworth Obituary

Brigadier General (Ret.) Carl Tyler Butterworth passed away peacefully at his home in Crumpton, MD on Saturday, January 2, 2021 surrounded by his family.

Carl T. was born in Elkton MD on October 9, 1939 to parents Frank Hutton and Evelyn Tyler Butterworth. He grew up in Newark DE with younger siblings Audrey and Rodney Butterworth. Upon graduation from Newark High School, Carl T. joined the United States Air Force and began his aviation career.

His military career began in March 1959 when he was accepted as an Aviation Cadet. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in June 1960 and assigned to Dover Air Force Base as a C-124 co-pilot in the 15th ATS (MATS).

While on Active Duty he progressed to the Aircraft Commander as an Instructor Pilot. His experiences were worldwide and included many classified missions.

In June 1965, he transferred to the Air National Guard in New Castle DE where he accepted an Air Technician Position as a C-97 Flight Simulator Instructor.

He assumed Command of the 142nd Tactical Airlift Squadron, flying C-130A aircrafts on May 12, 1971. He was appointed Commander, Headquarters Delaware Air National Guard (DANG) on November 1, 1977.

With over 6,800 military flying hours, his experiences include participation in United Nations missions in the Belgian Congo, the Berlin operation in 1972, the Cuban crisis, Santa Dominican crisis and the Vietnam War providing airlift support.

Carl T. also had a 33-year career with America Airlines as a Captain flying domestic flights from the Baltimore and Washington area with over 6,500 civilian flying hours.

He married Carolyn Virginia Clough in Ingleside MD on November 24, 1962 . They lived in Crumpton MD with their three children; Carla Lynn, Craig Tyler and Chad Paul. Carl T. is survived by his wife, children and two grandchildren; Madelynn Violet and Maxwell Ethan Minear.

He was a member of the Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department and served the Crumpton United Methodist Church as Treasurer in the past. He spent much of his retirement volunteering at the Air Mobile Command Museum at Dover AFB restoring airplanes.

A graveside service is scheduled for Monday, Jan 11, 2021 at 12 noon in Sudlersville Cemetery in Sudlersville, MD. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.fhnfuneralhome.com
