Alice Heller Obituary
She was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Virginia, the daughter of George Otto and Charlotte Elizabeth Suffern Maurer. She married Duane B. Heller in 1951 in Chicago, and he preceded her in death in 1968.
She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Yocis (husband, Jay) and Brenda Hausterman (husband, Tom), both of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Rebecca Bowker (husband, Gary) of Lakewood, Colorado; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Erickson (husband, Milton) of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, George F., Robert, and John Maurer.
Alice Jean was a 1949 graduate of Virginia High and continued her lifelong pursuit of education by attaining her bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1969 and her master's degree from Xavier University in 1979. She taught elementary school for over 25 years in the Forest Hills School District in the Cincinnati suburbs. Following her retirement she joined the Peace Corps, serving 3 ½ years in the Philippines. She returned to her hometown of Virginia in 1996.
Over the years, she maintained a passion for travel experiences and toured extensively across five continents. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia.
At her request, cremation has been accorded. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia followed by a committal of the ashes at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends at the church from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of services. Memorial gifts are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Virginia Public School Foundation. I was a student of Ms. Heller's at Newtown Elementary the last two years she taught there. She followed my class from 5th to 6th grade. I started off 5th grade dreading her classes but by the end she was my favorite teacher and still is to this day (I'm 40 now). She encouraged me, pushed me to do my best and she still inspires me while I complete my bachelor degree today. Her travel stories took us to the far off places she visited. I still have a post card she sent me. I loved her dearly and wish I could have let her know as an adult just how much. My condolences to the family. I send love to you all. Thank you for sharing her with so many of us.

I was a new teacher at Newtown School years ago and remember Cleo being friendly and helpful when I really needed it. She not only made a difference in the lives of all the children she taught but also was an important and memorable model for a new teacher.

I taught with Cleo for several years in Forest Hills S.D. She was a wonderful person and so fun to know. I was driving down 8 Mile Rd last week past the house and was thinking of her. My sympathy to your families.
