Bernice Lovekamp Obituary

BLUFFS - Bernice Luella (Meyer) Lovekamp, 98, of Bluffs, passed peacefully into her heavenly home Friday, June 17, 2016, at Heritage Health in Mount Sterling.

She was born, April 14, 1918, the daughter of Heinrich (Heine) and Anna (Minnie) Winkelman Meyer. She married Robert Lovekamp, May 26, 1946. He preceded her in death, Aug. 13, 1993.

Surviving are five children, Nancy Lovekamp, Linda (Melvin) Thies, all of Jacksonville, Galen Lovekamp of Bluffs, Carol (Brice) Lawson of Griggsville, and Robyn (Michael) Williams of Judsonia, Arkansas; 10 grandchildren, Ginnie Adkins of Springfield, Phillip Lovekamp of Bluffs, Angela (fiancé, Michael Makabi), Travis (Jessica) of all Chambersburg, Cody Lawson of Griggsville, Crystal (Benjamin) Sotomayor of Kingwood, Texas, Carrie (Colby) Birlson, Michelle (Kyle) Holloway of Searcy, Arkansas, Michael (Veronika) Thies of Jacksonville, and Pam White of Port Charlotte, Florida; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Cindi Lovekamp; and two sisters, Louise (John) Schroeder, and identical twin, Bernida (Harold) Rolf.

Bernice graduated from Arenzville High School in 1918. She attended and completed a two-year teaching program at Carthage College. Following Carthage College, she taught seven years in one-room country schools. Bernice took time away from teaching to raise a family; returning to Meredosia Elementary School where she taught for 22 years. She enjoyed sewing, making banners for her church, quilting, making jewelry, reading and writing both prose and poetry. An accomplished author, she won contests for her writings.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Bluffs/Neeleyville. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Daws Family Funeral Home in Bluffs. Interment will be in the Trinity Cemetery near Bluffs. Memorials are suggested to the Bluffs Trinity Lutheran Church, Bluffs Library or library of choice, or Meredosia Elementary School for new playground equipment. I have such good memories back in the days when we were neighbors and our kids played together.

One time when I came back to Ilinois for a visit she gave me book of her poems. I still enjoy reading them.
