Dan Moy Obituary

Dan Moy, 79, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

He was born July 17, 1939, in Jacksonville, the son of Edward V. and Frances Shelton Moy. He married Patricia "Patsy" Marie Mann on June 9, 1963, in Jacksonville, and she survives.

He is also survived by two children, Anne Marie Moy of St. Louis and Doug Moy of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Erin Ellet, Anna Moy and Molly Moy, all of Chatham; and one sister, Prudy Ballard of Jacksonville.

A 1957 graduate of Jacksonville High School, Mr. Moy continued his education at Western Illinois University and later received a master's degree in Education from Fisk University in Nashville, TN. He returned to Jacksonville School District #117 where he inspired students and taught chemistry with a passion at Jacksonville High School over 35 years. He also served as the head cross country coach, girl's track coach, and freshman football coach at JHS. Dan was also a well-respected IHSA track official for 48 years and served as the official score keeper for the 1985 IHSA State Basketball Tournament. His love of running continued through the years when he organized the 4th of July 5K Race at Nichols Park.

A devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church, Dan had an affinity for helping others. He founded the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle at Jacksonville High School and served as a patient ombudsman in area nursing homes. He also volunteered for the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and served on the Wells Center Board of Directors from 1997-2003.

Dan was an official judge for Illinois State Fair harness racing events, as well as the Iowa county fair circuit. He served as a member of the Police & Fire Commission for the City of Jacksonville and was a long-time member of the Jacksonville Children's Foundation Board of Directors.

In recognition of his dedicated service to the community, Dan was honored with the Unity in the Community Award in 2014 and was named the Kiwanis Lay Person of the Year in both 1983 and 2012. Dan was also named YMCA "Man of the Year", Jacksonville Elks Club "Man of the Year", and was inducted into the Jacksonville High School Sports Hall of Fame. In 1995, Dan was inducted into the Illinois Track & Cross-Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. And the Jacksonville High School Invitational Cross-Country Meet held each fall in Community Park was renamed the Dan Moy Invitational in recognition of his long service, his volunteerism, and his devotion to student athletes across central Illinois.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, with light refreshments to follow in the church parlor. A visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Private committal will be held later at the Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to Midwest Mission Distribution Center or JHS Cross Country Team. Condolences may be sent online at buchanancody.com.

Dan Moy, the man that planted in the seed I the back of my mind that I wanted to teach. 15,000 students later I still ask myself... what would Mr. Moy do? Thanks for leading me down this path Dan.

He touched so many young lives by his example and leadership, and so many others by his tireless, personal, dedication to serve his community in many, many ways. He was a friend that will be very much missed and always remembered as an example for a life of service well lived

Hi Patsy. I'm so sorry for your loss. Dan was one of the "men" in my life. It was Freshman football practice in 1964. I was scared to death having never gone out for a football team. Intimidated and so careful. Coach Moy settled me down, gave me confidence, laughed at my mistakes and gave me the fix at the same time. So encouraging! I started out in the 1st game as a defensive end on an undefeated football team. He showed me how to become a young man with a plan. He influenced so many young men for so many years. You have so many really cool memories. Cherish them like I know you will.

I will miss Dan greatly. He first was a mentor and then became a friend. I do not know why he picked me but I am glad he did. Sharing his experience and knowledge without passing judgement on my lack of experience as a teacher and a coach was always appreciated. Upon his retirement we hunted birds often. That was a lot of fun. God has always placed men of faith in my presents to help guide me. Dan was one of those men.

It is with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to this amazing man. From the 1st time we met Dan, he was bigger than life. His love of track & field/cross country was only surpassed by his love of the people who shared his passion. We could always count on Dan to help whenever/where ever needed. He wanted only the best for those around him and was quick to tell athletes and coaches "job well done". He will be missed by many and there will be a "hole" left where he once stood at the starting line. Unfortunately, we are unable to be at his service. We will be thinking of Dan and those he has left behind. Rest in Peace dear friend.

Every now and then we run across a person who has made the world a better place. I feel that Dan Moy was that sort of person. I did not have the opportunity to coach against Dan but participated in may meets which he was an official. I have never encountered an official in any sport who had a truer since of fairness. He had an special way of balancing the fairness of the athletes with the fairness of the rules and I believe all gained by his influence. He will be missed in the track and cross country community and i wish my deepest condolences for his family.

Patsy,
It was by circumstance I learned of Dans passing. Although my father was pastor at Grace Church for only a couple of years before we moved away in 1969, you and Dan were so integral to his ministry there. Over the years I would ask my parents if they had hear from you (Dan) and we would talk about how special you both were. As a coach he pushed all to be the best they could be and treated everyone with such kindness and respect! So many are better people because of him, and you! His legacy reaches so many and so far.

Our condolences to the family & friends of Dan Moy. Both my wife and I had Mr. Moy as our Chemistry teacher at JHS. He was always patient with us (even when we nearly burned the school down in Chemistry class). Outside of class he was a great role model and taught Sunday school at our church. He loved sports and was always willing to talk about his favorite team. If there is an Illinois Teachers Hall of Fame, he deserves to be in it!

My contacts with Dan Moy were few, however the one I will remember is the Monday morning Dan shared with me he was to start treatment for cancer. We held hands and prayed together, little did we realize that morning was the start of the last leg of lifes marathon race. Dan ran the last leg without ever expressing a complaint to me. Yes, I will miss Dan. Mrs. Moy and family, I and Velma extend our condolences to you, may the Good Shepherd comfort your hearts, and walk with you and protect you through the valley of sorrow.

What a great loss for this world! However, he is an excellent addition for eternity in heaven and the coming new earth. His pleasantness and smile is still remembered from my high school days. I look forward to my entry into heaven to see and visit with such wonderful people. He brought joy to class and learning. I am sure he is dearly and greatly missed. He lived a life of serving others and thus was greatly blessed!

Mrs. Moy and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't tell you enough how much Coach Moy meant to me both as a runner and as a student in his chemistry class. He inspired me to make a life's work of working with runners as a physical therapist. I remember well and count as my best times my days with the JHS cross country team and summer Junior Olympics and all of those car rides to track meets, summer jobs and FCA and how that changed the path of my life. I still find myself repeating the stories and sayings with the runners I work with that Coach Moy planted in me back in my time in Jacksonville and am grateful for all of that wisdom. You will be missed!

Beverly Middendorf Segal

March 23, 2019

Dear Patsy and Prudy,

The Middendorfs lived on West Douglas Avenue across the street from the Moys for many years and thus we all grew up together. Danny was a constant in our life as a small boy and teenager and Lynn, Kaaren and I shared many happy times with Prudy and Danny. Later Danny was so very kind and helpful to our Mother and Kaaren as they struggled with their own illnesses. After reading the many wonderful compliments about Danny's adult life as a teacher, coach, and very good friend to the Jacksonville community, I know that Danny's children can be very proud of their Dad. What a good example he set for all of us. You have my deepest smypathy and love up- on the loss of such a very good person.

I am a better person for having known Dan Moy, first as a student at JHS, as a fellow member at GUMC, then being judged in my masters race walker events by Dan at track meets in my senior years. Just read all the tributes people have shared, and you understand the positive impact Dan made on so many. And the master said, Well done my good and faithful servant. Gods peace to you Patsy, and to the extended Moy family.

March 22, 2019

Dear Patsy and Family,

We send thoughts and prayers to you all. Dan was such a good man and one of our favorite teachers at JHS. We have many happy memories of being in Mr. Moy's chemistry class. Sharon admits to getting "the look" from Dan more times than she cares to admit. (The look - mildly amused and a little annoyed is how she chose to interpret it. Fortunately, he had a great sense of humor!)

In the years after high school, we always enjoyed seeing him at Grace Church or out and about in Jacksonville.

We are so sorry for your loss. We will miss him.

Sincerely,

I had Mr. Moy for Chemistry I and Chemistry II back in 1993-1994. I'd have to say he was my favorite teacher hands down. He always made class interesting and entertaining. My twin brother was in Chemistry II with me my senior year. Mr. Moy would call us "Pete" and "Repeat". Makes me laugh to this day. God Bless his family during this time of loss.

March 21, 2019

I first met Mr. Moy when he and Pop (Charlie Bowen) were setting up QC for Anderson-Clayton foods, in the early 60's; I was just a kid then. Later I had him for high-school chemistry at JHS. Funny, I sat in the same seat as my brother George, and for the fist couple of weeks of class he called me George. One day my lab partner said, "Mr. Moy why do you call Chuck, George all the time?" He looked at me and said, "You are Chuck?" I nodded and after that he called me by my name. He was a great man! And, left a great legacy. Thank's coach Moy!

Mr. Dan Moy was most definitely a Prince-of-a-Man, who is fondly remember by hundreds of people! He was a caring and conscientious teacher, an encouraging and inspiring coachwho set high standards for all his athletes to strive to reach higher goals. Likewise, Mr. Moy modeled the true meaning of a Christian Life.
Mr. Moy knew my husband quite well as he also knew all of Rogers brothers and sisters. Likewise, he knew my sisters and I, and always inquired about each and every one of them whenever we ran into each other around town in Jacksonville. When Roger passed away, Mr. Moy came through the line at his visitation. Mr. Moy was so supportive and comforting, and I will always remember his sincerity and caring comments.
May it bring loving comfort to Patsy and his family to know Mr. Moy is free from all suffering and is in the presence of our Lord in Heaven. God surely makes a special place in heaven for such angels as Mr. Dan Moy!

Patsy and family, I am so sorry for your loss! You and Dan grew up with my brothers and I through DeMolay and Grace Church. Folks like Dan are impossible to replace, but everyone he touched surely tried to emulate his goodness. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Among all his other accomplishments Dan was a kind, caring and giving person. He not only inspired the youth he taught and coached, he lifted the spirits of many hospital, nursing home and transitional care patients. Dan lifted my husband, Mike's spirits every time he visited. He was a delight to work with at my daughter's meets. He was not however the best at giving directions. lol He will be missed by all of us who were blessed to know him.

March 21, 2019

I need to share this story about Dan Moy. Not only was he a great teacher and coach, but he is what I would call a personal friend. He was a committed member of the Grace UMC in Jacksonville(my home church).
As my mother Ruth Holmes aged, I would take her to church as she wasnt able to drive. I would always receive a warm greeting from Dan as he was a regular usher. He was warm and friendly, inquiring about what was happening with me.
He and Patsy(my 4th grade teacher at south) attended and taught Sunday School... the class that my mom attended.
They would also go out for dinner afterward on a fairly regular basis.
On one of these occasions, my mom had a cardiac event where there was neither a heartbeat or pulse.
Thanks to Dan Moys knowledge and quick thinking, he started CPR as someone else called 911. Ten minutes later the EMTs arrived and took over. She was 90 years old at the time and, with his intervention, she was able to live two more years before she passed last Easter.
I will miss my friend!! One of a kind!!

I met Dan sometime after I moved to Rushville in 1984 and became editor of the local newspaper. I would talk to him while taking photos at area track and cross country meets. As an official, he was always fair and efficient and never lost sight of the fact that the kids came first. I had two children who went through the track and cross country programs at Rushville High School. After they graduated, Dan always would ask about how they were doing, and showed a genuine interest in them. He was always fun and interesting to talk with, and had a story for every event.

I am truly sorry to hear of coach Moy's passing. As a skinny freshman distance runner who had no coach in Pleasant Plains, Dan was always there to give me advise or provide a ride to a winter indoor track at the U of I.
Even though that was back in the mid-70's, I remember it like yesterday. Wishing the Moy family all the best and truly sorry for your loss, as we will be missing one of the great ones! God Bless!

I first met Dan when I was a first year teacher-coach at Jacksonville High School in 1968. Yes, that is along time ago. We worked together as assistant basketball coaches and often played pick up games. A few years later I left the area to pursue a college coaching career and when I returned to visit would often make contact with Dan. He never changed in his high level of enthusiasm for what he was doing and his love and passion for track and cross country. His sly and dry sense of humor was always appreciated but what made Dan Moy stand out was his high degree of character. Dan the athletic world and education will miss you. Rest in peace.

March 20, 2019

I first met Dan in 1984 coaching track at Jersey High. In a short time frame we developed a great freindship between the two of us and our families. At the 92 state meet on the back stretch , I told him I was getting married that summer, prior to asking my wife. He said he'd like to come down for some cake.
Dan was polite, fair and had a since of humor we all liked. His charm, pleasantries and dry humor regardless of age would usually bring a grin to all.
WE will all miss Dan, but we will ALL have a Dan story.
He told me on our last time together. You know I can beat this THING.
He was a great leader and set the standard.
Let's all do the best we can to follow his example.
My regards to Patsy and family.
Sincerely, Larry Foscat Foster.

I feel fortunate to have had the good fortune of receiving his encouragement and knowledge as his student and through the years to feel his warm smile and hug when I would see him while visiting in Jacksonville. Mr. Moy was one of my favorite teachers at JHS. Not only was he my Chemistry teacher, he was also the cross country coach and I was a cross country cheerleader. During my junior year, while I was taking Chemistry, he was ALWAYS available for help, cheerful, fun-loving and positive. That was in 1975 and after I graduated, I never saw him again.

Until two years ago. My mother and only brother has passed away within two months of each other. I returned to Jacksonville for their memorial service. As I was standing in the receiving line, an elderly gentleman greeted me saying, Im sorry for your losses. Ive always been so proud of you; youre a dentist, right? Mr. Moy! I exclaimed in surprise. What a delight to see you after more than 40 years! Oh, call me Dan now. I cant stay because Im going to a race in St. Louis, but I just wanted to express condolences to my student. That was vintage Mr. Moy-a true gentleman, thoughtful and always taking time for one of his students. May you Rest In Peace, Mr. Moy!

Patsy, Doug and Anne Marie, I'm sorry to learn of Dan's passing. He was a good man and an inspiration as a coach. I have so many fond memories. He awarded me the "gold brick" I'm thinking three years in a row. I'm sure there were many reasons for this, but chief among them had to be taping one leg up for shin splints. When he finished he asked me how it felt. I said, fine but it was the other leg. He wasn't too happy.

My condolences.

I first met Dan Moy in the fall of 1970 while I was coaching cross country and basketball at Edwardsville high school.
Seven years later, I would accept the boys' head basketball coaching position at Jacksonville. Before interviewing for the JHS job, I felt comfortable telephoning Dan to inquire about the Jacksonville school district, its administration and commitment to sports' programs. Dan's openness and honesty led me to pursuing that job.

I became good friends with Dan and Patsy through our basketball program where Dan served as official timer and also as Grace Methodist Church members. Dan touched many young and older lives in most positives ways through his coaching, teaching and witnessing for Christ. Gerry and I cherish our memories of Dan and Patsy.

I don't know where to begin. Dan touched my life in so many ways over the years. First as a coach and teacher when I was in high school in the 70's. Then a colleague when I myself started teaching chemistry at another school. He was always supportive when I reached out to him for advice and guidance. And when my son ran cross country so many years later Dan had retired but was still actively involved. I was always touched and grateful that he took such an interest in my son. I know he made a difference in so many other lives through his various community involvements. He was a true gentleman and will be missed by so many.

March 20, 2019

I first met Dan in my first season coaching junior high track, in 1996. Over the following years, he officiated numerous cross country and track meets that we attended. He was always courteous and fair, and expected coaches and athletes to conduct themselves in a like manner. On a more personal note, he took in interest in my son's career after high school, and would always ask how he was doing. I valued our friendship, and will miss him very much. My wife and I would like to extend our sympathy and prayers to his family.
