Edith Massey Obituary
She was born March 17, 1922, in Roodhouse, the daughter of Herman and Bertha Axley Welch. She married Warren T. Massey on March 24, 1941, in South Mills, North Carolina, and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1986.
Naydene is survived by two children, Becky (Robert) Esslinger of Champaign and Warren T. (Christine) Massey Jr. of Hilton Head, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Chad (Patricia) Esslinger of Downers Grove, Stephanie Esslinger-Wheeler of Champaign, Jennifer Massey-LaFrance of Charleston, South Carolina, and Jeff (Kate) Massey of Memphis, Tennesee; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Francis Welch and Raymond Welch.
Naydene was a Realtor for Grojean Agency in Jacksonville for many years. As a young lady, Naydene attended the University of Chicago, worked for the federal draft board during World War II, and later served as volunteer director at the Jacksonville State Hospital and then Passavant Hospital. She founded the Candy Stripers program at Passavant Hospital in the 1960s. Naydene was president of the Junior Women's Club, a member of the Jacksonville Building Commission and founder of the Youth Attention Center in Jacksonville. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Naydene enjoyed golf and was a master bridge player.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Carle Hospice, Home Care, Dr. McCoy and Champaign-Urbana Nursing and Rehab for the love and care they provided. Naydene was a very loving, strong and confident woman who we will hold in our hearts forever.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will meet friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
