Ernest Gregory Obituary

Ernest (Ernie) Duane Gregory
Meredosia - Ernest (Ernie) Duane Gregory, age 77, of Meredosia, Illinois passed away at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026 in his home.
Ernest was a man of quiet strength, steady hands, and a generous heart. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from April 9, 1968, to March 18, 1970, during the Vietnam War. Ernest was a combat medic in Vietnam, caring for others in some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable, many of them his friends. His military service was not just a chapter of his life-it was a source of lifelong pride. Ernest carried deep respect for the uniform, for those who served alongside him, and for the sacrifices made in service to the United States. He rarely spoke at length about his time in Vietnam, but it shaped who he was-his humility, his compassion for others, and his unwavering sense of duty.
Ernest was employed by National Starch and Chemical for over 40 years, finally retiring as the Lab Supervisor. Earlier in life he had worked for Meredosia Elevator and was engaged in farming with Eldred Ehlert.
On October 2, 1970, Ernest married the love of his life, Sharon (Burnett) Gregory. Together, they built a life centered on family and commitment-a partnership that lasted more than fifty-five years and stood as an example of devotion and enduring love.
Ernest believed in giving back. He served his community for several years as a trustee on the Meredosia Village Board, was a faithful member of Versailles Christian Church, and proudly belonged to American Legion Post #516 in Meredosia, Illinois. Wherever he served, he did so humbly and without seeking recognition.
At home, Ernest was happiest in his wood shop, where he could create something useful with his hands. He found his greatest joy in spoiling his four grandchildren-Madison (22) (companion, Joseph Pursley), Alivia (17), Abel (14), and Alexandra (10)- and making memories that will be cherished forever. A simple golf cart ride around town was often all he needed to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Ernest is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; Daughter, Tina Gregory; Son, Mark Gregory (Ashley); his four grandchildren; his brother, Jack (Janie) Gregory; two sisters, Sue Walker and Lisa Stubblefield along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Francis Gregory, and an infant brother.
A private graveside burial and military service will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL. A celebration of life will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can made to the Meredosia American Legion Post #516 or the Versailles Christian Church Youth Group and may be left at or mailed to the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, Illinois 62353.
The Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling is assisting the family with the arrangements.
