Ethel Hand Obituary

EL PASO - Ethel M. "Pat" Hand, 82, of El Paso and formerly of Ashland died Friday evening, April 10, 2015, at Advocate Bro-Menn Hospital in Normal.

She was born November 4, 1932, in Prentice, the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel Rohn Summers. She married Gilbert Lee Hand on July 21, 1951, in Pleasant Plains, and he preceded her in death on August 9, 2011.

She is survived by two sons, Rick Hand (wife, Donna) of Ashland and Tom Hand (wife, Debbie) of El Paso; a daughter, Jill Houser of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Noel of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Mark and Jane Hand; two brothers; and four sisters.

Pat was a graduate of Ashland High School. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who, after raising her children, worked at Capitol Records in Jacksonville for more than 25 years. She was a member of Berea Christian Church. A talented quilter, she also enjoyed creating craft items to share with family and friends and sell at area craft fairs.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland with burial at Bethel Cemetery in Sangamon County. The family will meet friends from 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial gifts are suggested to Ashland Volunteer Fire Department. To the Hand family, we are so sorry to hear of Pat's passing. We both worked with Pat out at Capitol, and even though we have never met any of you, we feel as though we know you, as Pat would always talk of her children and grandkids. she was very proud of you all. She was fun to work with, always had time to help you if you needed it, and she always had time to be a friend, when I needed someone to talk to. One short, funny story to tell about Pat, we were talking one day about middle names, and she would never tell hers. So, trying to guess what her's was, I asked her, is it Myrtle? Never did get an answer, but, to this day, we always called her Myrtle. Rest in peace, Pat.
