CARROLLTON - Goldie McLane, 93, of Carrollton went peacefully into the arms of her beloved Lord and Savior on Monday, September 7, 2015. She passed away at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville.
Goldie was born January 2, 1922, in Waynesboro, Tennessee, the daughter of Amos Henry and Claytie Belle (Morgan) Skelton. She was married to Richard E. McLane on November 25, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, by Dr. Palmer. Goldie and Richard were blessed with three children: Richard E. (Ronna) McLane of Yorktown, Virginia, Patricia A. McLane (deceased) and Deborah K. (Robert) Hunter of Jerseyville. They also have four grandchildren: Lisa (Dan) Hunter Beuttel and Amy (Doug) Hunter Godar, both of Jerseyville, Angela (Brad) McLane Crossin of Valparaiso, Indiana, and Richard C. McLane of Yorktown, Virginia. Goldie has eight great-grandchildren: Natalie Beuttel, Alec Beuttel, Emily Godar, Samantha Godar, Paytne Godar, Broderick Crossin, Reese Crossin and Peter Crossin; and one great-great-grandchild, Spencer Ruck. Goldie was survived by her sisters, Irene Skelton Smith of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and Helen Skelton Terlecki of Trenton, Michigan; a brother, Howard Skelton of Waynesboro, Tennessee; a half sister, Carolyn Skelton Bosheers of Loretto, Tennessee; and half brothers, Leo Skelton of Magnolia, Arkansas, William Thomas Skelton of Tullahoma, Tennessee, and Henry Skelton Jr. of Waynesboro, Tennessee.
During Goldie's lifetime, she worked as a seamstress in the garment industry in Kansas, Florida and Illinois. As a young woman she moved to Detroit, Michigan, for employment that supported the World War II effort for her country. She met her husband, Richard, at the Packard Motor Car factory while building aircraft engines for the Royal Air Force, truly a member of "The Greatest Generation". Goldie and Richard raised their children in Carrollton. She enjoyed her rug club, cooking, sewing and gardening. Late in life, she was employed by Frank Thornber to assist Richard in the sales to court houses until retirement. Goldie was a kind, loving, sweet-spirited mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all who knew her. Her Christian faith and family were the work and joy of her life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Carrollton. She served as an associate deaconess for two years and a deaconess for 14 years. Goldie taught Sunday school in the second grade primary, and served as an usher and greeter.
Goldie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter; sisters, Belle Folger, Jean Pollock and Willie May Skelton of Waynesboro, Tennessee; a brother, Robert Lee Skelton of Collinwood, Tennessee; her stepmother, Thelma Rose Skelton; a half sister, Dorothy Skelton Holt; and a half-brother, Charles David Skelton.
A service to celebrate Goldie's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Carrollton. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Pastor Al Heger will officiate.
