Herschel E. Carriger
Chapin - Herschel E. Carriger, 91, of Chapin passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the Scott County Nursing Center in Winchester. He was born, Sept. 20, 1933, in Glasgow, the son of Darwin and Madaline Blair Carriger. He married Norma Grant, June 16, 1957, at the Chapin Methodist Church.
Surviving is wife, Norma of Chapin; children, Barbara (deceased husband, Charles) Gatlin of Jacksonville, Jerry Carriger of Chapin, Daniel (Julia) Carriger of Chapin and Shane (Monica) Carriger of Bluffs; 8 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and siblings, Henry (Linda) Carriger of TX, Jack (Vickie) Carriger of IL, Howard Carriger of MO, Herb (Sheri) Carriger of IL and Sheryl Brooks of MO. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Carriger and siblings, Helen Coats, Harold Carriger, Hettie Carriger, Hal "Dee Dee" Carriger and Harley Carriger.
Herschel was a member of the Chapin Lions Club, Western IL. Tractor Club, Prairie Land Heritage Museum in Jacksonville, Chapin American Legion and Combined Honor Guard Ceremonial Team. He served on the Chapin Elevator Board, Chapin Volunteer Fire Dept and Chapin Rural Fire Association as president. Herschel had a passion for woodworking, and he loved supporting West Central and Triopia athletics. In his younger years, Hershel enjoyed playing basketball and football at Winchester and also Yellow Rockers square dancing. His whole life was raising his 5 kids, farming, woodworking, golfing and tractor cruises.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the Daws Family Funeral Home in Winchester with interment in the Chapin Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday, 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Chapin American Legion.
