Larry McGrath Obituary

Larry McGrath
Jacksonville - Charles "Larry" Lawrence McGrath of Jacksonville, IL passed away Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Born on March 30, 1954, Larry grew up in Murrayville. He was raised Catholic and attended St. Bartholomew Church in Murrayville and Our Saviour Church in Jacksonville. He graduated from Routt Catholic High School in 1972. Following graduation, he proudly joined Local Union 904 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He worked across the United States as a Master Carpenter and Construction Manager on numerous large commercial projects until he retired in 2009.
Larry had a strong will, quick wit, and a heart that beat to its own drum. He loved woodworking, contemplating his next big idea, and spending time outdoors fishing, hunting and riding his motorcycles and ATVs. His dedication to craftsmanship and stubborn perfectionism could be seen in every project he touched. He had an unwavering ability to work endless hours and make countless sacrifices to provide for his family. He was a man who spoke his mind, even when it ruffled feathers or broke convention. He loved to use humor to share his perspectives with family and friends and strongly believed in providing "character building" opportunities.
Larry is survived by three resolute children with Vicki McGrath (née Forrester): Shane McGrath, Laura Fanning (Jon Fanning), and Kathleen "Kat" McGrath (Tony Seaborn). He leaves behind four grandchildren who made him immensely proud: Madison and Morgan Fanning, and Shane Jr. and Mason McGrath; along with several furry four-legged grand- and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind Bonnie McGrath (née Williams). He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen (née Flynn) McGrath; and his brother, James "Tim" Timothy McGrath.
A memorial service will be held at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 3 p.m., with a visitation from 1 to 3 p.m.. His children will share memories and hold a short prayer service at the end of the visitation. Larry was never one for flowers or frivolous spending. While donations can be made to the Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes; formally the Breakthrough Type 1 Diabetes (Formerly JDRF)) in Larry's honor, we simply ask that everyone celebrate his life through stories and laughter. Condolences may be left at buchanancody.com.
