Maris Gent

1938 - 2025

Maris (Ross) Gent, 86, of Marshall, IL, passed away on July 15, 2025.
Born and raised in Paris, IL, the only child of Forrest "Wayne" and Geraldyne Ross, Maris devoted much of her life to public service, working with distinction in the Edgar County Assessor's Office, before taking the position of Supervisor of Assessments of Morgan County in 1988.
Her long career was a testament to her dedication and work ethic, leaving a lasting impact on the communities she served.
Maris was a loving and devoted wife to her late husband, Laurence (Alton, IL), and a cherished mother of four sons, Ross (Charleston, IL), Michael (Jacksonville, IL), Joshua (Paris, IL), and Jacob (Everett, WA). Her family brought her immense pride and joy, and she found great happiness in watching her five grandchildren, Levi Gent (Champaign, IL), Noah Gent (Fort Collins, CO), Kayla Petty (Paris, IL), Brianne Cochran (Paris, IL), and Francis Gent (Everett, WA).
Outside of her professional life, Maris was an avid reader and had a deep love for nature. She enjoyed gardening, and she cultivated beauty both inside and outside her home.
Maris and Larry were both passionate about dogs, raising and fostering a variety of dogs, all with remarkably distinct, but no less lovable, personalities. Bird watching brought her peace, and she admired the wildlife that visited her garden and surrounding areas.
Maris was known for her kindness, patience, and unwavering support of her loved ones. She will be remembered for her spirit, dry wit, and devotion to her family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Laurence (2016), and son, Joshua (2024). She leaves behind her sons, grandchildren, and a host of family and friends who will miss her dearly.
A memorial service will be held in her honor from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th at Lake Ridge Christian Church in Paris, IL.
