Sharon Peters Obituary

Sharon Rose Peters
New Berlin - Sharon Rose Peters, 79, of New Berlin died on Thursday morning, December 19, 2024, at her home. She was born August 12, 1945, in Jacksonville to Fred H. and Helen J. Werries Peters. Due to Helen's polio complications, Sharon's older sister Diana acted as a second mother to her.
Sharon's education included studies at Springfield Junior College, Illinois College, and the University of Illinois, culminating in a master's degree in social work in 1969. Her career in social work began with an internship at the Andrew McFarland Center, followed by 33 years of full-time employment there. Sharon also worked in private practice and later worked with Memorial Home Health, retiring after 11 years of service.
Sharon was known for her kind words, caring spirit, and colorful wardrobe. Her greatest joy was hosting family and friends in her home. While she was not blessed with any children of her own, she felt all the children of the world were hers, and she was honored to care for so many through her social work. Sharon was a life-long resident of New Berlin and a member of St. Mary's Church in New Berlin.
Survivors include her sister Diana McQueen of New Berlin; 14 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Melvin, Fred, and Harold Peters; one sister, Rita Peters; and one niece Nancy Flach. She was also preceded by her long-time companion, Paul Werries.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 23rd from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Berlin. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Sharon's remains will be buried at a later date. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Cemetery and Woodwreath Cemetery. Daws Family Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.

I also knew Sharon throughout most of my Springfield work life. She was a force of nature. Sharon always had a kind word, quick smile and curious mind. We often caught up at conferences! Condolences to the family and all of us numerous friends.

Sharon was always very sweet and loving towards my family. Sharon was a long-time, dear friend of my Uncle Joe Crickard, and I got to know Sharon from my visits out to Illinois. She was always there when family passed and was always a delight to speak with. May she rest in peace and bless her sweet soul.

I´m so sad to hear of Sharon´s passing! She was always so friendly and took the time to speak to you no matter where you were (work or at the grocery store or public events). Once you became Sharon´s friend you were her friend for life! Sharon had a bubbly personality and could always make you laugh.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends during such a heartbreaking time. Sharon will truly be missed by me. God sure did gain a beautiful Angel when we lost Sharon!

I worked with Sharon for 30 plus years at McFarland where she was once my supervisor. I talked with here by phone this past summer, but it was hard to believe she was gone. I guess it speaks to one's own denial of mortality. I did not see her one last time, but she will ever be in my thoughts and memories. My sincere condolences to Diana and the rest of Sharon's family. Thank you for taking such good care of Sharon. She is now forever happy in God's hands!
