Etta Remick Obituary

Etta May Remick, longtime resident of Westmoreland, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully in her granddaughter's home in North Swanzey, surrounded by her family on October 13th, 2024.

Etta was born on October 14th, 1930 in Canaan, New Hampshire to Robert J. Black and Ruth E. Adams, and was the oldest daughter in a family of nine children.

On June 21, 1947, Etta married Floyd “Ted” M. Remick in a small ceremony in Canaan, NH. They shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and companionship. In the early 1950s, they moved to Cheshire County, where Etta worked at several local businesses, including Princess Shoe, Target Cleaners, and People’s Linen. However, her primary role was that of a devoted homemaker, raising her four children and providing childcare for all of her grandchildren. Etta was deeply family-oriented, and her nurturing spirit and loving presence were a cornerstone of her family.

Etta was an active member of her community and attended Sturtevant Chapel in Keene, NH, where she found joy and connection with her faith and community. She had a passion for genealogy, often traveling to cemeteries to visit the graves of her ancestors and chart her family tree, a pursuit that brought her great joy and connection to her heritage. Etta also had a love for classic movies, which she enjoyed sharing with her family and friends.

Etta was a woman of many passions. Her hobbies included gardening, baking, sewing, and knitting. Etta loved photography and taking photos with and of her family. She was also a devoted animal lover, particularly fond of cats. Her family will always remember her famous dishes; raisin cookies, apple pie, and bread pudding, that brought everyone together at family gatherings.

Etta is survived by her four children: Linda L. Swanson and her husband Edwin R. Swanson of Richmond, NH; Floyd M. Remick Jr. of Hinsdale, NH; Gail G. Swanson and her husband James A. Swanson of Hinsdale, NH; and Christy M. Whitcomb and her partner Emerson L. Lyons of Marlboro, NH. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Edwin R. Swanson Jr., James A. Swanson Jr., Timothy O. Swanson, Matthew F. Remick, Lora M. George and her husband Spencer P. George, Fae F.J. DeLunara, and Victoria L. Whitcomb, as well as ten great-grandchildren. Etta shared a special relationship with her youngest great-granddaughter, Gemma Morgan, affectionately known as "the babe," with whom she lived at the time of her passing. Additionally, she is survived by her niece, Marjorie Tibbits.

Etta was predeceased by her husband, Floyd M. Remick, and her siblings: Carolina Ruthier, Robert Black Jr., Ralph Black, and Carl Black.

A private burial will be held for immediate family in Richmond, NH, where Etta will be laid to rest with her husband, Ted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Etta's memory to the Monadnock Humane Society in Swanzey, NH.

Etta May Remick will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire all who knew her.
