Don Smith

1934 - 2023

Donald Wayne Smith, 88, of Plainview passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 20, 2023 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jacob West officiating. The family will greet guests following the memorial inside the Parlor.

Don was born on August 14, 1934 in Pampa, Texas to Bert and Mary Adelpha Smith. He was the youngest of four children and graduated from Pampa High School. He later joined the United States Army and became a paratrooper. He was stationed in Germany and met the love of his life, Christa Kunkel, whom he later married. They moved back to the states where they enrolled and graduated from Wayland Baptist College. Don became a teacher for Roosevelt School System in Lubbock and then the Plainview School System. In Plainview he taught 8th grade history and coached football, basketball, and track & field at Estacado Jr High. Don and Christa have three children, Caren Smith of Plainview, Texas, Danny Smith and wife Nan of Amarillo, Texas and Derek Smith and wife Brenda of Lubbock, Texas. There are three grandchildren, Bailee Smith of Brownfield, Saige Smith of Lubbock, Texas and Kade Smith of Lubbock, Texas. There are two great grandchildren, and many nieces worldwide. Don is preceded in death by his parents as well as both sisters and his brother. The family suggests memorials to the Christa Kunkel Smith Endowed Scholarship in care of Wayland Baptist University.
