June Cheek Obituary
June Carolyn Cheek passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family on September 22, 2025 at the age of 90. Memorial Services will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the First Baptist Church in Floydada with Mark Snowden officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Floydada.
Carolyn was born in Quitaque, Texas, on May 8, 1935. She moved to Floydada at the age of three, where her grandparents, L.C. and Katherine McDonald, had a small farm and an auto and implement dealership that her father took over in 1938. Her father, Clement "Clem" McDonald, ran the dealership for many years. Her mother, Hilda McDonald, was a first-grade teacher and church organist. Her brother Ray was born in Floydada in 1942.
Carolyn attended Hardin-Simmons University to study Music Education. After beginning her career as a public school educator in Odessa, she later returned to Floydada with her young family to teach music, eventually transitioning to bilingual first grade at the old R.C. Andrews building, before Duncan Elementary was built. She retired from teaching in 1999 after serving her community for over 30 years.
In addition to her classroom teaching, Carolyn taught private piano lessons in her home. Hundreds of people in the area learned to play piano at the old yellow house on California Street.
She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Floydada and after retiring from teaching, she worked in the church library for several years. She also worked at the Floyd County Library and loved reading and sharing her passion for books.
Carolyn was active in many groups, including the Red Hat Society, and was a member of the Singing Women of West Texas and performed across the country and internationally.
She was a devoted supporter of Texas Tech athletics and had taken many trips with the Tech Women's Basketball team, including to Austria, Hawaii, and Australia. The only thing she loved more than Texas Tech sports was the Texas Rangers baseball team.
Carolyn leaves behind five sons - Derek and wife Kari, Jett and wife Nancy, Don, Lane, and Laron, 15 grandchildren - Laura Nicole, John, James, Elizabeth and husband Simon, Hannah and husband Cole, Adam and wife Ana, Grayson, William, Rebekah and husband Kevin, Michael, Jillian, Ashlyn, Rachel, and Ayden, and six great-grandchildren - Tristen, Eli, Chase, Arlo, Jack, and Nash. She is also survived by long-time caregiver and companion, Maria. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marilyn, her parents, Clem and Hilda McDonald, grandson Jeremy, brother Ray, and granddaughter Sycada.
The family is eternally grateful to the team from Interim Hospice who lovingly cared for Carolyn during the final months of her life. Their love and compassion was felt by us all.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the First Baptist Church of Floydada Food Box Ministry.
