Geneva Mathews Obituary

Geneva "Gen" Lucille Mathews, 88, longtime Rensselaer resident, peacefully died Sept. 23, 2025, in Indianapolis. Her massive family and her dog Hachi were by her hospital bedside.

Geneva was born Aug. 13, 1937, in Mount Ayr, to Eathel Hayward Adams and Elmer Adams. She married her childhood neighbor George "Ted" Mathews on May 1, 1954, and the two remained married until mercilessly, death did them part in December of 2009.

Geneva will always be remembered for her support and love for her family and friends, as well as her stunning gardens. She was also the singular most capable woman in any given room. She loved being surrounded by those she cared for, with abundance of laughter and coffee, including her pals at Janet's Kitchen.

In loving memory, Geneva is cherished by her children, Carol McKiel, Laura Nolen, Glen Mathews, Tom Mathews, Ann Mahan, Walter Mathews, Jennifer Mathews, Kenneth Starnes, Jennifer Cox and Collen Mathews. Geneva leaves behind two half-sisters, Karen and Glen Ellen; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Steven Mathews and Mark Mathews and her husband, George Mathews.
