Alton Cox Jr., 87, a beloved father and the husband of Helen Prosser Cox, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday morning, May 29, 2013 at his residence.
Mr. Cox was born the son of Thomas Alton Cox and Mary Effie Wheeler Cox on May 7, 1926 in Williamsburg County. He was a retired employee with International Paper Company and was a retired United Stated Army Veteran. He was a member of the Earle United Methodist Church. Over the years, he assisted in building several churches including Pine Crest Baptist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and farmer. Moreover, to those who have known him, his greatest accomplishment is his legacy of patriotic honor, Christian values, and loving fatherhood for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
Alton and Helen were married on August 14, 1948 and celebrated 65 years together. Their home was blessed with: four children, Alton "Al" (Nancy) Cox III, Anthony "Tony" Deleon Cox, Kathy Delores Cox, and Kelly (Bill) C. Fenters; three grandchildren, Matthew Alton Cox IV., Ryan (Brooke) Fenters, and Kyleigh (Bubba) C. Shirley; and five great-grandchildren, Bailey Cox, Jacob A. Cox, RyLee Fenters, Bryant "That Little Boy" Fenters, and Barnes Shirley.
He was predeceased by: his parents; a son, Tony; a daughter, Kathy; four brothers, Horace Cox, JC Cox, Thomas Theron Cox, and Carlisle Cox; and four sisters, Lavere C. Gorman, Winifred C. Register, Hilda C. Showell, and Jeanette C. Evans.
A Going Home Celebration with Military Honors will be 4 PM, Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Earle United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Harmony cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 6-8 PM, Friday evening, May 31, 2013, at the Andrews Chapel.
The Cox family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to: Dr. David P. Rodgers, Ahava Hospice of Columbia, SC, Dr. Michael Gibson, Denette Bowman, and Ellen Turner for the care and compassion shown to them during this journey.
