David Brittain Obituary

David L. Brittain
Little River
David Lamar Brittain, 74, of Little River, SC and formerly of Roanoke, VA went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 following a nearly three-year battle with melanoma.
Dave was born on June 7, 1939 in Roanoke, Virginia and he was the son of the late Jesse G. and Esther Skeen Brittain. He was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Virginia and graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1961. He spent the majority of his career working for Travelers Insurance Company.
He was very active in his church, Trinity United Methodist Church of N. Myrtle Beach, SC where he sang in the choir. He was a former member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, VA where he served faithfully.
But Dave's passion was his family who he loved very deeply. He was the devoted, loving husband to Carolyn Whitworth Brittain for 50 years. He was the most caring father his children could have ever asked for. Laura Savinda (George), Andy Brittain, Becky Rieksts (Brian), and Katherine Sandvos (Mark) were blessed and thankful to call him Dad. And he was the best "PawPaw" or "Pawdaddy" to Chandler and Nicholas Brittain, Cayton and Raygan Savinda, and Nolan and Grady Sandvos. He also leaves behind Chip, Diane, and Grace Casola, who have become like family over the years. Also surviving are his sister, Jeannette Simmons, and cousins, other family members, and numerous friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at MUSC and Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston, SC for their excellent care, especially Dr. Keisuke Shirai.
A memorial service officiated by Rev. Michael Ritter and Rev. Ed Daniel will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 706 14th Avenue South, North Myrtle Beach, SC. Burial will be held in Roanoke, Virginia at a later date. The family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, March 7 from 6-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Music Ministry at Trinity United Methodist.

Carolyn and all Dave's beloved family,
Dave was truly a wonderful Christian gentleman. A talented singer, he always gave his best when he performed with the Kings' Men in services at FBC or in the adult choir. Rest assured he will be singing lustily in the heavenly choir. May God bless each of you and wrap his comforting arms around you in the days to come as each of you deal with David's home going. May happy memories of this outstanding husband, father, grandfather, and friend bring you peace and gratitude for having known David.

Carolyn and family,
John and I were so surprised and saddened to read of Dave's passing. The last time we communicated, he was doing so much better. I hope that in the days and weeks ahead, that the beautiful memories of your life together will replace the grief and sadness of his illness and death. We look forward to seeing you soon in church at the beach.

I went to W & M with Dave and also worked with him at Travelers in Richmond; he was a great guy who had a dry sense of humor and was fun to be around. He will be missed.

We are definitely stronger in our faith and have new membership at the Trinity Methodist church due to Dave and Carolyn's caring and reaching out natures. We always look for
Dave and Carolyn in the choir. One Sunday we couldn't see Dave and thought he might be out sick. But that Sunday the exta tall men got toward the front. We were so glad to see Dave after church, well and healthy. Larry & Marianne Vandawalker

Carolyn, as I remember the many Christmas Pageants at First Baptist, Dave is part of all my memories. He lead my group on stage over many years. He was a fun person to be with and had tremendous faith in our Savior. Today I am giving God thanks for the blessing of knowing Dave and all of his family during those years we shared at First Baptist. May God comfort you with His peace. Cherry Mann Titus

I knew your loved one many years ago when we were in school and church youth choir together. We were in the same H.S. graduating class.
My memories are of his love for music and his great faithfulness to what he considered to be important.
You have been blessed to be his family.
My husband and I pray God to give you peace and comfort as you grieve his passing.

I don't know if you remember us but our deepest sympathy on the loss of Dave.

Dave, we had so much history together over the last 60 years. Yes, the first 20 were a little sketchy because of our age difference and the distance between us - but even during those years - the beach trips in the 50's (I was just bratty kid under 10), and attending your wedding in Richmond, just a few blocks from where Sharron and I eventually placed our church membership 8 years later. Then came Staunton in 1974 - all of a sudden we work for the same company - in the same office - and this goes on for 10 years. And we followed you to Roanoke - and moved right down the street - and we carpooled, and we coached together, and we raised kids in the same schools for several years. And even when our trek to Connecticut separated us for a season, we stayed close. You visited us in our CT home, and when we came back South, within a couple of years we began attending the weddings of our respective children, and presiding over family reunions together, and we vacationed for 8 years in your condo. And dined together countless times, and attended entertainment together and watched VA Tech football together at Oscar's. And I'll always remember the night I sang "Purple Haze" in karioke at the House of Blues as we celebrated one of my more recent birthdays.

How I had hoped that when I retired later this year, we could spend more time together, but God had other plans for you. And now, I can't imagine the world with you not in it! I will miss you big brother! What an awesome man you were!

Dave and I were classmates at William an Mary, active in the Baptist Student Union, and residents of Monroe Hall. Joan and I moved to Northern VA in 1973 and have seen the Brittain family on many occasions. Dave was younger than me (by two days) so I'll always remember his birthday!

It's sad to lose yet another cousin & to see another family grieving the loss of a special person. Dave's generation is left with but one cousin out of many but Dave's passing will leave a lasting hole in the Brittain family. May the family find solace in Dave's glorious voice in the heavenly choir and may you all know you now have a special angel looking over you. Love you so much.
