David Fishkind Obituary

David John Fishkind
December 9, 1954 - August 16, 2019
Murrells Inlet
It is with deep sadness that we announce David John Fishkind, of Murrells Inlet, died suddenly August 16, 2019 of cardiac arrest following a serious accident in his home. David was born December 9, 1954 in Summit, NJ, the beloved son of Janet B. and John J. Fishkind.
David, raised in Maplewood NJ, was a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. He had a long career as a professional chef, which spanned a diverse spectrum, from the sleek environs of midtown Manhattan, to numerous rustic Catskill mountain cafes, to a long tenure as executive chef at a country club in Massachusetts. He also loved serving as chef for innumerable private catering events. His favorite culinary accomplishment came early in his career, when he served as tour chef for the popular rock band Loggins and Messina.
Upon his retirement from the culinary world, David worked in real estate in Murrells Inlet, specializing in new homes and condos. As with everything he did, he loved serving his clients, and his enthusiasm was infectious. And true to David's gregarious nature, he befriended a number of the families he sold homes to in Murrells Inlet, and they remained close friends to the present.
In recent years, David was the devoted caretaker to his aging parents who moved to Murrells Inlet to be near him. No task was too big or small when it came to caring for Janet and John. After the loss of his mother, he prepared dinner for his father every single night, because to David, food was the ultimate expression of love.
Throughout his lifetime, David would never be found far from the ocean. From the New Jersey shore, to Carriacou in the Carribbean, to Murrells Inlet, David found happiness at a beach. Yet a close second to his love of the beach was his love of the mountains and skiing. He skied with his family at Belleayre Mountain in New York for years, and also enjoyed many ski trips with John at the best ski resorts of the West.
David had a deep abiding love of Nature, a love of gardening, and loved animals, cherishing his kitties Peanut and Zachary.
One rarely missed David's entrance! He was loud, animated, and charismatic. Yet beneath the colorful exterior lay a deeply sensitive man. At his core, David was warm, caring, and loyal to family, friends, and neighbors. David's true gift was his ability to make connections with people wherever he went, to make people laugh and feel engaged. He loved to be surrounded by good people -- the more, the better! – to entertain them, feed them, and spin long tales for hours on end. He was generous to a fault, always there for friends in need, always ready to be helpful.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet. He is survived by his father, John, sister Aimee Campbell (James), niece Katherine, former wife Jody Leeds, and stepdaughter Trinity Klein.
We know family and friends near and far share in our enormous grief. A memorial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of David Fishkind can be made to Murrells Inlet 2020 (www.murrellsinletsc.com) or the ASPCA (www.secure.aspca.org).

Not a day has gone by since David left us that I have not thought of and/or talked about him. He was a true friend who blessed my life so much as well as the friends and family who knew him. My life is better because of David. His intensity, his humor, his culinary abilities and his passion for life were so much of what defined him. I am so thankful for the memories but miss him more than words can ever express.

So very sorry to hear of David's passing! I just heard recently. I knew him many years ago when he worked at the Country Club in Agawam, Ma.

We met David when we moved to Myrtle Beach at the sales office in Market Common. While he did not sell us a home we found him to be so friendly and engaging. We also made it a point to say hello to David at the various events where he sold popcorn. We will miss his presence and warm smile. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

I met David when he moved to California in the 70's, and he immediately became a part of our core group of friends, which is to say he was part of the family that mattered most at that age. It was a magical time in a magical place. We were all deeply drawn to the incredible music of the time - live music was everywhere - and the magnificent mountains and landscapes of the upper and lower Ojai valleys, creeks, hot springs, swimming holes and the beaches of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. My friend, Cheryl, and I rented a house next to David's house in Ojai. The houses were nestled under oak trees, and someone converted a small shed at the rear of the property into a little sweat shack with a wood burning stove and bucket of water to ladle over the hot rocks; another friend pitched a teepee a few feet away. David's house was bigger than ours, with a nice kitchen where he juiced giant bags of carrots and sometimes hosted a large spread for dinner. Most memorable: the counters of David's kitchen covered with rows of perfectly sliced vegetables for my first taste of Japanese style tempura. Our house was set back under the oak trees, but David's house was exposed with a large flat roof where people sometimes slept on warm nights for a view of the night sky.

David was wild and funny, an incessant talker, an asker of questions possibly the first person I had met from New Jersey (whew, is everyone from New Jersey like this?). A self-identified Deadhead I had never met anyone who traveled the country to follow a rock band, or rode on the bus with a band (whoa, did he really say that to Bob Weir?). He had many stories, which he told with great enthusiasm, waving his hands and arms and always with his great big smile. Sometimes, when he might have pushed or gone a little bit too far, a sheepish look would cross his face. Underneath the bravado, there was a sweetness, a kindness and great generosity of friendship. I am so sorry that he has left us so early. I will cherish all of the memories, but especially that sheepish smile. See you up on the roof one of these nights, David maybe we can catch a meteor shower -

My deepest sympathy to David's extraordinary family who has always treated me like one of their own. I will never forget David's amazing ability to turn a frown upside down, selfless acts of kindness, his positive attitude, vast knowledge of just about anything, his spontaneous nature, his beautiful culinary creations, his wisdom and just an all around beautiful person. David, I will miss you so much, the pain is unbearable, but I have peace knowing that you will forever and always be with me in my heart and soul. I Love you!

David, you made everyone around feel like a best friend thanks for treating me so well in those Crestview years, who else would save 12 pounds of chicken francaise, 6 pounds of potatoes and 24 chocolate chip cookies for one hungry tennis pro we love you

Ahh, the memories...endless conversations, and wild times, as we chased Jerry Garcia all over California, in David's datsun truck.(circa 1976ish)
I feel, and am sorry, for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to David's family and friends. What began as a realtor/client relationship quickly evolved into a dear friendship. I will always treasure the Popcorn events I was privileged to work with David, and the many meals and concerts we shared together. He was an incredible chef, storyteller extraordinaire, and an irreplaceable friend.
