David Poteet Obituary

David L. Poteet
Pawleys Island
David L. Poteet, 71, of Pawleys Island passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 at MUSC in Charleston, SC after a long and courageous battle with leukemia.
Born in Falls City, Nebraska, he was the oldest child of David Reavis and Jerilee (Williams) Poteet. The family moved to the Kansas City area in 1950. While living in Independence, Mo, he attended high school at William Chrisman graduating in 1965.He was an outstanding athlete and played on the varsity football team. He served as a Navy Airman from 1968 to 1970 on the carrier USS Coral Sea with a tour of duty off Vietnam and later entered the Naval Reserve. After the Navy he entered the insurance business which became a lifelong career that he loved.
In late February of 1988 he joined Old American Insurance, a subsidiary of Kansas City Life, as a Regional VP. He married Holly on March 4th in Tempe, Az. & the next week moved to Charlotte, NC. They later moved to the Lake Norman area to begin his East Coast Regional Manager duties. He loved traveling, training General Agent Managers and their staff and mentoring young agents as they began their new careers. He thrived on planning awards banquets, cruises, golf outings and "working" trips to Hawaii, Australia, Alaska and the Caribbean. The Corn Huskers, Royals & Chiefs were dear to his heart. His Lake Norman life was filled with many friends for 4th of July parties, Carolina Panthers tailgating, Bridgeport parties, fishing, and lots of golf. He always enjoyed returning to Kansas City to see his family & old friends.
In 2001 he and Holly moved to Pawleys Island, SC to be close to the beach. They began building their future retirement house, making new friends and joining a golf club. Having fun was David's life! In 2013 David retired and began traveling. His life abruptly changed when he was diagnosed with cancer. He found a church he loved, was baptized in the ocean and began the fight that ended peacefully October 6th of this year.
David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Holly (Bach) Poteet, his mother Jerilee Poteet of Independence, Mo., brother Roger Poteet (Kim) of Gladstone, Mo., nieces Marla Badalucco (Joe) of Kansas City, MO. and her daughters Olivia & Ella, Dara Evans (Chad) of Kansas City, Mo. and her son Hank, sister-in-law Jill Bach of Pawleys Island, SC, Aunts Alice Stump of Thermopolis, WY & Joan Williams of Marion, Iowa & many cousins around the country.
