David Wellons Obituary

MYRTLE BEACH | David Thomas Wellons Sr., 55, of 78th Ave., N. Myrtle Beach, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.

David was born in Dunn, N.C. and lived there until his family moved to Fayetteville, N.C. He attended Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville, and was a guard with the Junior Varsity Football team in 1965 and 1966. He received a football scholarship to attend Carolina Military Academy in Maxton, N.C. where he graduated in 1968. He attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga. in 1968. David was an Eagle Scout in a family with six Eagle Scouts. He left Fayetteville, N.C. in 1969 to go to Myrtle Beach to manage the Paladin Motel, which was owned by the Wellons Family. David was a successful entrepreneur with great vision of the future and had the ability to motivate others to set goals to achieve their vision. In 1970, he became an owner and manager of the Firebird Motor Inn and decided to remain in Myrtle Beach as a hotel operator and land developer. His latest accomplishment has been to put a PUD together, demolish the original Firebird Motel, develop and build a 20 story condominium resort called the Grand Atlantic scheduled to be completed August 2006.

David was selected as the outstanding young man of the year in Myrtle Beach in 1977, a charter member of the Myrtle Beach Sertoma Club and a member of the Myrtle Beach Rotary Club. He attended motel management school and took real estate courses. He attended and supported First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach and was a charter member of Northwood Temple of Fayetteville, N.C.

David's hobbies were collecting Coca Cola memorabilia, collecting antique furniture, golfing, and supporting the Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motor home and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mr. Wellons is survived by his wife, Mildred Jerome Wellons; his children, David Thomas Wellons Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Myrtle Beach, Jonathan Wesley Wellons and wife, Heather, of Myrtle Beach, Denise C. Staton and husband, Kelly, of New Bern, N.C., Chad Jerome Carriker of Myrtle Beach, and Toni C. Jones and husband, Kelly, of Myrtle Beach; and 13 grandchildren, David Wellons III, Madalyn Wellons, Patience Wellons, Carolina Wellons, Cydney Staton, Cameron Staton, Parker Staton, Reagan Carriker, Davin Jones, Matthew Jones, Carson Jones, Mackenzie Jones, and Bridger Jones. Wellons II of Fayetteville, N.C., and brother, W. Cooper Wellons of Murrells Inlet.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach. The funeral will be conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach at 2 p.m. Funeral procession will follow to Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery.

January 20, 2006

I would like to send my condolences to the entire Wellons family. I met Mr. Wellons several years ago when I lost my home through foreclosure after my divorce. He worked with me and helped me keep my home by acquiring a loan and leasing the property back to me. After three years and credit repairing, I was able to buy the house back from Mr. Wellons. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to know Mr. Wellons. He was truely a God-send to me. My thoughts are with everyone who knew him and loved him.

A Selfless Vessel. That's what I want to be.

You sometimes never know how wonderful a person is until they are gone. I was so impressed with the passage Mr. Scott Leonard, whom I don't know, has written about Mr. Wellons. He truly is sitting at the right hand of God, with no more suffering, until he meets with your family again.

We continue to pray for your strength during this difficult time.

David Wellons taught me many things during our 37 year friendship. One of those things was to "never say never" and to always remain hopeful. I worked for David for 17 years at the Firebird and will carry his influence with me for the rest of my life. He was a man of unfailing energy and commitment. I will always miss his counsel and friendship. Debbie Braden

To all of the Wellons family members:

So sorry to hear about David. Mom kept me updated about him, and he stayed on my prayer list and in my thoughts. The Wellons family has a special place in my heart especially as I think back to our annual Christmas gatherings for so many years. David was always so cheerful and a pleasure to be around. My best to each of you and your family members as you deal with your loss. May God grant you peace through the wonderful memories you have of David and the life he shared with each of you.

I was heartbroken when I got the call about David. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all - Mildred, and all the Wellons Family - during this sad, sad time.

One of my most precious memories of David, happened the summer I visited White Lake - all grown up with kids of my own. Of course I had told my boys White Lake stories and they desparetly wanted to go out on the boat and maybe even try skiing, like mom had done as a kid. I had told them that probably wouldn't be possible and NOT TO ASK. But David semmed to sense their desire and walked over and invited them into the boat. They were thrilled. He messed with them all afternoon and was so kind and patient with their childish ineptness. They still talk about that special day.

To the Wellons Family,

Meeting the family members I met while seeing David for physical therapy was a pleasure. What a legacy he has left in you all. He was so proud of his family. I have never met a more generous man at a time of difficulty. He was always worried about everyone else. Mildred, what a wonderful job you did caring for your husband. Your family is to be commended for their care and support during the difficult time at the end. I see a lot of family dynamics in caring for loved ones. Your family has a lot to be proud of. David was a fighter till the end. I am sorry I did not have the pleasure to know you under better circumstances, but I feel honored to have had the pleasure to meet you all. Now he is without pain and discomfort. May the Lord be with you all and give you peace and comfort.

Sincerely and Prayerfully,

Dearest Mildred, David Jr., Jonathan, Ms. Wellons and family,

We know that there are no sweet words of comfort, that we might offer, which are powerful enough to ease your pain at this time. However, we do know that The Great Comfortor has, and will continue to lovingly embrace you, protect you, and comfort you.

David has fought a great battle and you have fought that battle along side him, very courageously. He loved life more than anyone we know, and we know that he did not let go easily. However, his faith was clear and he openly expressed that, not just in the face of illness, but long before. It is our prayer that this will be your greatest comfort, knowing that our lives may be interrupted by separation, but not forever.

We simply cannot express how dear David has been to our family, never more than over these past two years. We are eternally grateful that the Lord blessed us with such a friend. Resoundingly, you are hearing of the countless deeds of kindness he has offered to so many. We will never know the impact this one life had on so many others.

Hold on to the fact that David loved each of you immeasurably. How great it is to love and be loved like that.

Please know that you are, and will remain, in our daily prayers. May God bless and keep each of you.

With Love,

Wendy, David Jr., Zach, and Jacob Anderson

Our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family as you grieve this painful loss. It has often been said that one's greatest legacy is those he leaves behind. Although we did not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Wellons, we have observed many fine qualities in his son, David, that certainly reflect the family values taught by his father: kindness, Christian reverence, generosity of spirit and an unwaivering devotion to family. May your faith and your knowledge that Mr. Wellons' spirit lives on in each of you bring you comfort.

January 2, 2006

I remember David as a person who valued family and who was generous and fair. David represented Myrtle Beach to me, and as I feel such a deep loss at hearing of his passing, I realize that Myrtle Beach is a poorer place now that David Wellons will no longer greet tired travelers to the strand.

As I sit in Ventura, California, my heart is thousands of miles away in Myrtle Beach with Mildred, his children, his mother and brothers, and all of the great tribe that loved David Wellons. My prayers are with them, and I mourn this great loss with them. I am so very grieved to know that I can no longer come to the Carolinas and spend time with David. I am sad that I will never again see a Panther game with him or sit around with my wife Linda and David and his wife Mildred in their living room and reminisce our experiences and talk of family folklore. I will never again hear him brag on his children and grandchildren so lovingly. David always made me feel as though we came from this great heritage and that he and I were among a few who recognized and valued our kin in such a special way. What a loss to our family this truly is, and news I do not want to know and yet ...

There are so many things I realize at this time are gone because my friend David is gone; however there is also such a reassuring peace that comes over me even as I type and that is this: Of all the many great times I had talking with David, the one overriding topic that we seemed to talk about was his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and his belief in the Bible as God’s true Word. The peace I sense as I write is due to the strong and real understanding that my days of building memories with my cousin and friend David Wellons are only temporarily paused until one day when I too will be in heaven. That is when David and so many other people we have known who have put their faith in the Lord will be together again forever. Oh yea, it is true, we are only at a brief pause in eternity, and many good times lay ahead at our next reunion!

I am very sad to hear of Mr. Wellons' death. I met him through my sister, Sandra, who worked for him many years. He was fun spirited, caring, and generous. "Selfless" This occassion marks approximately 1 year ago inwhich I made a "providential" call to Mr. Wellons son concerning the tzunami which had just happened. Mr. Wellons immediately made arrangements to partner in an enourmous relief effort.

Through his efforts, many people in Sri Lanka were fed and helped.

In the summer, a hurricane hit Mexico. Again, the work he did in December and January was still providing for needs of these victims.

Then Katrina...

To make a long and detailed story short. Through this vessel, which struggled with health this year, he lived by faith, and by lending himself to God's will. While in pain himself, God had used Mr. Wellons to help many many people.

And to those that came to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour..

From the Island of Sri Lanka, to fishing villages in Mexico. There have been atleast 300 people saved during these relief efforts.

A Selfless Vessel. That's what I want to be.

I have many memories of 'Uncle David.' He was always a joy to visit with when my family and I were in Myrtle Beach or White Lake. Today brought the sad and unwelcome news that David Wellons had passed away on the last day of the year, 2005. David was fun-loving, kind-hearted, generous, and loyal. He will be missed.

While I was growing up in New York State, we visited North Carolina every summer. I remember staying at the Wellons house in Dunn. David would be so glad to have company, even as a child. Many years later, when I was a young mother living in Goldsboro, David invited me to come to Myrtle Beach to spend Spring Break. He gave us a room at the Firebird and treated me like a VIP. Later when our house was being remodeled, we came to the Firebird for a month, and I saw David almost every day.

On other visits to the beach, David and Mildred would invite us over, take us out to dinner, take us to their church, and come with us and our kids to the amusement park. I will always cherish my memories of him and his many kindnesses.

I want to express my sympathy and love to Mildred and the entire Wellons Family. Through the years, I had several opporunities to spend time visiting and talking with David, Mildred and their family. I will never forget the gatherings at Myrtle Beach, White Lake, The Farm, and others. I will always remember the care that David took to make each person feel special and loved.
