Ernest Carter Obituary

Ernest Vernon Carter, Sr., 85, passed away Saturday Oct. 16, 2010 at his son's home in Hamlet, N.C. He was married to the late Thelestine "Tena" Jones Carter.
Mr. Carter was born in Deland, Fla., a son of the late Dewy Lee and Lottie Cox Carter. He was a former motel owner, farmer and salesman for Stuckey Brothers Furniture Co. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 27th Infantry Division of the 11th Airborne.
He was a member of the Rehobeth Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge, VFW and was a former member of the S.C. House of Representatives for Williamsburg County.
Surviving are his son, Ernest Vernon Carter, Jr. and his wife, Betty Carter of Hamlet, N.C.; sister, Lottie Joe Dennis of Hemingway, S.C.; grandchildren, Merridan Paul Carter, Jr. of Garden City, S.C., Shireen Carter Baxley and Brandy Carter Cribb both of Johnsonville, Tabitha Carter Garrison of Harrisonburg, Va. Ernest Vernon Carter, III of Danville, Va., Kristy Carter Anderson of Charleston, S.C., Lashanda Carter Barfield and Christopher Michael Carter both of Hemingway, SC; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carter was predeceased by two sons, Merridan P. Carter, Sr. and Thomas M. Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010 in the Rehobeth Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, with Military Honors, will be in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Rehobeth Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1573 Cow Head Road, Hemingway, SC 29554 from 1 until 3 P.M. Tuesday, October 19, 2010.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Center, 1119 US 74 West, Rockingham, NC 28379 or the Humane Society of Richmond County, 529 US 74 West, Rockingham, NC 28379.
