Ersell Long Obituary
The daughter of Samuel W. Lewis Sr. and Pet Myram Davis Lewis, she was born May 4, 1916 near the Monogram Community in Brunswick County. There she became adept at gathering the bounty of seafood it offered and did this until her early seventies. A devout Christian, she was a life long member of Sharon United Methodist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday school class. On one Sunday of each month she gathered the children at the front of the Sanctuary and told them of life here as it was in her childhood, so very different from present day.
She and her husband, Gafford H. Hewett Sr., owned the Dari Maid Drive-In, one of the first restaurants in Shallotte located near the present site of Joe's B.B.Q. It was noted for her own invention of the chili-cheeseburger and the first soft-serve ice cream in the area and was very popular with the high schoolers of that day, as well as the general public.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gafford H. Hewett Sr.; her second husband, D. Edgar Long; her daughter, Cynthia E. Potter; grandson, Thomas E. Potter Jr.; as well as three sisters, Alma Newton Sanders, Mary L. Carroll, Fairlee Jones; and one brother, Chapman Lewis.
She is survived by her son, Hoyle G. Hewett Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Shallotte Point; three brothers, Samuel W. Lewis Jr. of Supply, F. Lindburg Lewis of South Port and Richard D. Lewis of Shallotte Point; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren; in addition to a loving son-in-law, Thomas E. Potter Sr. of Houston,Texas; and a special friend, Mrs. Alpha Russ.
The family will receive family and friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, Supply Chapel.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Eddie Hill and Pastor William Chappel officiating.
Family and friends will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyle G. Hewett Jr. (Bill Jr). 1515 Gurganus Rd SW, Shallotte Point, N.C.
