Ian Davis Obituary

MURRELLS INLET | Ian MacLaurin Davis, 57, died October 24, 2006 in Barbados.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 19, 1949, he was the oldest son of Elizabeth MacLaurin and Richard Holmes Davis.

He attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College and then joined his father's material handling business, R.H. Davis, Inc.

Ian later began his own company, Storage Concepts and Allied Equipment Company in Durham, N.C.

A long-standing contributor to the communities in which he lived, Ian will be long remembered in Durham for his commitment to the Parkwood Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for many years as Assistant Fire Chief.

After retiring from his business, he moved to the Inlet to enjoy the home on the creek that had been part of his family for five generations.

Ever the restless entrepreneur, he began new businesses there, designing traditional Scottish furniture, customized Harley Davidsons and ultimately fulfilling his lifelong dream of building sportsfishing yachts, a loving tribute to his namesake, Ian MacLaurin Davis II, who was tragically killed in 2002 at the young age of 18.

An accomplished and well-respected engineer, designer and salesman, Ian will be remembered for the love he had of his family and friends and for his generosity. He gleamed with pride when surrounded by his three beautiful children.

He delighted in cooking abundant meals for as many friends and neighbors as could fit in his home.

Ian is known for his love of the ocean and his off-shore tournament fishing expeditions on the Sorry Charlie and the Sorry Too, his passion for gardening, Fourth of July celebrations, riding his Harley and for donating and preparing food for hundreds of people involved in the Inlet Spring Clean-ups for many years in an effort to make the Inlet a place everyone could enjoy.

He is survived by his daughters, Kimrey Dawn Davis and Heather MacLaurin Davis, both of Hilton Head; two grandsons; a brother, Evan Richard Davis of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Louisa Leila Davis of Silver Spring, Md.; two nephews and a niece.

He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Eliot; and son, Ian II.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet.

Dear Heather and Kimrey,
My fondest memories of Big Ian was getting to spend the summers with him and Betty in the townhouse apartments. Ian was "always" cooking for folks to come over and we had such a great time at the pig pickins' etc. He really helped to mold my life at such an impressionable age. My summers would have been boring if it weren't for them! I really enjoyed spending time with you girls (lit'l Ian wasn't born yet) and Ian was always the BEST host I've ever had (even after working here at Duke all these years)!! I thank God today that my sister met Big Ian because they made me an aunt to such wonderful children as... my Kimrey, Heather and little Ian. My life would not have been the same without you 3 in it!! I love you 3 children very much and you know I ALWAYS will!! I want you to know I am here for you. May God Bless You and Yours Forever (I KNOW HE WILL), Aunt Anne

Kim & Heather,
You guys are in our thoughts & prayers everyday. Ian was a great guy and will be remembered by everyone he ever met for his kindness and generosity. We have lots of memories of Big Ian... but my fondest is when my son (Reid) was burned during the fireworks show one year & Ian was able to calm him down & take care of him. Both Big and Little Ian will always be remembered for the special people that they truly were.
With love, Cindy & Reid Bailey (Perry's daughter & grandson)

I was SO sorry to read of Ian's death this morning. He was born the year my parents bought property just up the road from his aunt's place. So I watched him grow up during those long-ago summers. I actually helped him learn to swim in the creek when I was a young teenager! His heart was as big as it could be.
I'll miss him, but will always cherish the memories.
My love to you all.

Kim & Heather, I was shocked and saddened by the news of Ian's death. I can't begin to tell you how much he meant to me - I've always said he was the best boss I ever had. Ian was so proud of you kids - he beamed every time he talked about you - and he loved your visits to the office. "Gilbo" Bocetti & his wife send their thoughts & prayers as well. Please hold on to the good memories and know that many people share in your sorrow at this time. Please don't ever hesitate to call on me if there's anything I can do for you. I love you both very much. God bless you now and always.
