Jack Monroe Obituary
Myrtle Beach, SC
Jack L. Monroe Sr, 75, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
He was born December 30, 1942, in Bennettsville, SC, the son of George L. Monroe Jr. and Eleanor King Monroe. He was predeceased by his wife, Margo K. Monroe and a son, Jackie Monroe.
After high school he joined the U.S. Army, serving as an Airborne Ranger in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his services. Jack moved to Myrtle Beach, in 1967, and was employed with Santee Cooper for thirty-seven years before retiring in 2001. In 1981, Jack came up with a way riding horses on the beach could benefit some non-profit agency. He founded the American Heart Association Ride-A-Thon now called the Jack Monroe Beach Ride-A-Thon.
He is survived by his son, Michael D. Monroe and wife Tammy, grandchildren, Joel Monroe, Matthew Monroe, Jakob Monroe, Bailey James Vosburg, Hunter Monroe, and his sister, Julia Monroe Medlock.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 16, 2018, at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Saturday from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
