James Godhard Obituary

James Patrick Godhard

September 21, 1946 - October 16, 2024

Surfside Beach, South Carolina - James Patrick Godhard, age 78, of Surfside Beach peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 16, surrounded by his loving family.

Pat was born September 21, 1946, in Washington, DC, the son of Robert John Godhard and Annetta Mae (McPherson) Godhard.

He graduated from Northwood High School and the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history. He maintained an interest in history throughout his life and read many books about U.S history and politics in his retirement.

Pat married his beloved Sherry Lynn (McConaughy) Godhard on December 17, 1969, in Silver Spring, Md. Sherry preceded him in death on October 4, 2009, after almost 40 years of marriage. They shared a love of the outdoors, especially the ocean. Pat made many dear friends while he and Sherry raised their family in Maryland.

After a long career as a parole and probation officer for the State of Maryland, he retired and moved from Harwood, MD to Surfside Beach, SC, where he got to know people in the community and he enjoyed time with his new friends listening to music, fishing, playing bocce ball, and poker.

Pat was a proud and loving father and a devoted grandfather. Remaining to cherish Pat's memory are his children Chad Jordan Godhard and his wife Margaret, Amy Starr (Godhard) White and her husband John, and Trent Patrick Godhard; his grandchildren Jordan Kathleen White, Jack Austin White, Luke Patrick White, and James Noah Godhard; siblings Janet Marie (Godhard) Schoengold and Michael Raymond Godhard and his wife Lynette; nephews Joseph Aaron Schoengold, Jacob Louis Schoengold, Zachary Issac Schoengold, Lucas Michael Godhard, and a niece Marisa Nicole Godhard. Preceding Pat in death was his precious grandchild Christopher Jordan Godhard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pat's memory may be directed to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403 or at www.cbf.org/memorial.

Just learned of Pat´s passing. Such great memories of both Pat and Sherry over the many years. My wife and Sherry both attended HS together and I had so many years working with Pat. A great friend.

I first met Pat when both of us were sent to three days of training in Virginia Beach. In its typical cheapskate style, Parole and Probation forced two supervisors to bunk in the same room. I was apprehensive, but we instantly became great friends. We shared a love of salt water and especially Cape Henlopen State Park where we camped and fished together. Of all my friends, he was the one my son liked the best, and he was the one I had the most fun with. I will miss him terribly.

Loved talking to Pat about football. He loved Maryland Terps and kept up with Coastal Carolina. I took care of his yard and we became friends. I will miss Pat, he was a good man. Prayers for his family.

My husband Mick I were friends with Pat and Sherry since the 1970s. Pat and Mick ran a halfway house together and Pat was in our wedding. Sherry and I became close friends as well. All four of us enjoyed a unique and strong friendship lasting through the birth our children and into retirement. After we lost Sherry, we kept in touch with Pat when he moved to South Carolina. We will never forget the good times! Much love to his wonderful children and grandchildren.

Pat was a good friend and we both liked and spoke often about UofMayland sports. I am going to have to find someone else to talk Terps with. Miss you.
