Katherine Martin Obituary

Katherine M. Martin
Myrtle Beach
Katherine M. Martin, 81, died peacefully Friday, February 19, 2016 at Brightwater.
Katherine was born in 1934 in the Bronx, NY, the first child of Michael J. Feeney and Catherine McDermott Feeney.
She graduated from Aquinas High School in 1952 and a year later she entered the Sisters of Mercy, a religious order dedicated to education and hospital work. After her religious training and five years in schools in New York City, she was assigned to Our Lady of Victory Academy in Dobbs Ferry, NY. It was in OLVA that she would spend the next 36 years of her life as a Social Studies teacher.
She earned her BA from Mary Mount College in Tarrytown, NY and in 1970, a Master's Degree in history from Manhattan College. In the years that followed, she amassed 30 more graduate credits by attending seminars and summer institutes around the country.
As a teacher, Katherine brought a no-nonsense approach to the classroom that won her the respect of the students and faculty alike. She had the ability to create an atmosphere where learning could take place. She taught the full range of Social Studies from freshman introductory course to advanced placement history to the more gifted.
In 1971 she left Sisters of Mercy and a year later married Victor Martin, whom she met at OLVA. Katherine retired from teaching on 1999 and she and her husband moved to Little River, SC. They both worked at North Strand Helping Hand for approximately 5 years.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Katherine is survived by her husband, Victor A. Martin, Jr. and two sisters, Margaret Grifferty of Scarsdale, NY and Nancy Manning of Bronxville, NY.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, February 23 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Burial will follow at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens.
A guestbook is available at www.leefhandcrematory.com.

Mrs. Martin was a truly wonderful teacher and a lovely lady. She was serious about history but would crack the occasional joke now and then. Mrs. Martin retired the year i graduated OLVA. She will be sorely missed. May she rest in peace.

I am a Sister of Mercy in New York and entered the Convent at Tarrytown, New York about a year or so after Katherine. Katherine was a beautiful person, an inspirational nun and an outstanding teacher. I remember her best from her years at Our Lady of Victory Academy. She was devoted to the ministry of education and was faithful to her teaching profession for may years. We were so happy when Katherine and Vic met and eventually married. They were a most exceptional, loving couple and it seemed God had so designed their relationship.

I am only sorry I did not keep in closer touch with Katherine. She was a wonderful friend to so many Sisters of Mercy. She served her community and her Mercy sisters with dignity and grace; she continued to be one among us even after her life with Vic--they both became part of our lives. My deepest regret to Katherine's sisters, to Vic and to all who suffer this loss. Please know the Sisters of Mercy have received word of Katherine's death and we are praying for, remembering and talking about her. May her loving God bring her to eternal bliss. My love, prayers and friendship, Theresa Kane, RSM, Hartsdale, NY [email protected]

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
