Lucian "Luke" Pope Stephens
North Myrtle Beach
Mr. Lucian "Luke" Pope Stephens, age 93 of North Myrtle Beach, SC died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, SC. A native of Evergreen, NC, he was the son of the late Bud and Lyda Benton Stephens.
After serving in the United States Marine Corp during WWII, due to his love of the land, he returned to Columbus County, North Carolina to peruse a career in farming. He was one of the owners and operators of the New Chadbourn Tobacco Warehouse and was also a founding member of Waccamaw Bank serving on the board of directors for several years.
Mr. Stephens was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church in Evergreen, NC and an associate member of the First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach.
After returning to Columbus County he became involved in local politics where he served as a county commissioner and a member of the board of education.
In 1965 he relocated to North Myrtle Beach where he was the owner and operator of the Pelican Motel in Cherry Grove and later constructed the Blockade Runner Motor Inn in N. Myrtle Beach.
Final rites will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013 at First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach with Dr. John Gambrell and Dr. Harold Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the Stephens Family Cemetery, Evergreen, NC.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Budd Stephens and two brothers, Brunson Stephens and Jack Stephens.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Laura Floyd Stephens of the home; two sons, Lucian Pope Stephens, Jr. of North Myrtle Beach and Michael Floyd Stephens of North Myrtle Beach, SC; four sisters, Helen S. Cunningham, Leona S. Martin, Sue S. Gore, and Anne S. Gore all of Whiteville.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn, NC 28431
Memorials may be made to North Myrtle Beach Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Hwy 17 South, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.
