Nettie Edge Obituary

Nettie Suggs Edge
North Myrtle Beach
Nettie Suggs Edge, 90, of North Myrtle Beach died on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Oct. 15, 1920, in Loris, the daughter of the late Thomas T. and Docia E. Hodge Suggs.
Mrs. Edge was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and teacher and will be missed by all who knew her.
She was a graduate of Wingate College and taught in the Horry County Schools for 34 years, most of those years teaching Special Education. She began her teaching career at Cherry Hill, and moved to Sweet Home then to North Myrtle Beach Primary School where she taught until her retirement. During her years of teaching, Mrs. Edge shaped the lives of many Horry County students.
She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, serving the church in any way she could. Mrs. Edge was always a pleasant and kind person and an exceptional Christian lady who helped many people while forming the city of North Myrtle Beach. The more you knew her the greater appreciation you had. Her family, church and business became her life.
In addition to her teaching career, Mrs. Edge owned and operated the Ocean Edge and Jamaica Motels and several other businesses with her husband Robert. She had an extraordinary work ethic.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on the Bereavement Committee and attended the Adult Workers Sunday School Class. Her deacon, Darrell Perkins, played a tremendous role in guiding her in her spiritual journey. She had a nurturing spirit and loved to take care of others. This was evidenced by her return to Horry-Georgetown Tech where she received her LPN Certificate so she could serve as a Hospice volunteer. In addition, she loved spending time in her garden, but her children were her greatest source of pride.
Mrs. Edge had a strong sense of public service which she instilled in her four children, each of whom serve the public in some capacity.
The family would like to thank the First Baptist Church for the spiritual care she received throughout her illness and for the weekly flowers and audios.
Mrs. Edge is survived by three sons, Robert L. Edge Jr., Donald Edge, Tracy Edge and his wife Melissa, and one daughter, Bobbie Edge, all of North Myrtle Beach; one sister Roberta S. Ferguson of Abbeville, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Denny Lou McLamb of Little River; one brother-in-law Charles Edge of North Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren, Grayson, Amy, Hannah and Pierce Edge; a special niece, Oylanda Suggs of Loris; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Edge Sr.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach, 200 Hwy 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at Lee Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at the First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach with burial at Southeastern Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach.
Lee Funeral Home and Crematory of Little River/North Myrtle Beach is serving the family.

Gee, Bobbie Ellen and Robert, Jr., has it really been 12 years since dear Ms. Nettie went to be with Jesus? So hard to believe, but the beautiful memories I have of her, especially sitting in the `Jamaica Office Building´ enjoying her cooking, are so vivid! She might´ve been small in stature, but she was an amazingly huge Christian, who was always sharing with friends! Loved her, and love you!!!!

To the family of Mrs. Edge,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Mrs. Edge taught me in grammar school at Sweet Home which was many, many years ago, and was a great teacher. I remember her very vividly but had not seen or spoken with her for many years. What a blessing to have her for 90 years and for her service to so many over the years.

My heart is with my 'second family' at this sad time. You know how much I loved Mrs. Nettie, and how much I love all of you. It surely isn't going to be easy on anyone, but try your best to find comfort in God and in memories of the wonderful little lady who was your Mama. She was indeed a jewel...a perfect example of a fine Christian woman,so kind-hearted and loving, a Godly and special Mother, and true friend to so many. Her pride rested in the accomplishments of her children. Stay strong with God's help as you make your way through the next few days and months to come. Love to each of you!
