MARTINSVILLE, Va. | Norman Reed Stone, 85, of 3309 Figsboro Rd., Martinsville, Va., died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at his home.
Born May 8, 1924 in Henry County, Mr. Stone was a son of the late Columbus Stone and Bettie Walker Stone. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Edith Stone and Virginia Stone; and brothers, Donald Stone and Richard Stone.
Mr. Stone was married to Marie Frances Brown Stone who survives. He was a member of Jones Chapel Church of The Brethren, where he was a member of the choir and deacon in the church. He was a barber for a number of years at Art's Barber Shop and Hudson's Barber Shop in Martinsville, Va. He later retired from the City of Martinsville as Water Plant operator after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Figsboro Ruritan for more than 35 years, having held every office in the club, and had been honored with receiving the Tom Downing Award, the highest honor given a Ruritan member. Mr. Stone served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Pannell Post No. 42.
In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Stone is survived by a daughter, Molly Stone Jones of Martinsville, Va.; a son, Larry R. Stone of Myrtle Beach; five sisters, Loveleen Stone Lewis of Mebane, N.C., Alice Stone Stowe of Martinsville, Va., and Sue Stone Sparks, Shirley Ann Stone Tobler, and Nancy Stone Fain, all of Bassett, Va.; two grandchildren, Carolyn Jones Carter, and Malaura Jones Mastin; and three great-grandchildren, Marshall Carter, Lauren Carter, and Ashley Mastin.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 from Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Barry Sink officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Norris Funeral Services, and at other times at the home.
