Philip Ray Obituary

GEORGETOWN | Philip Lancaster Ray, 81, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at home.

He was born March 4, 1922, in Olar, a son of the late Cecil Browning Ray and Jessie Boyd Ray.

He attended Clemson University and Emory University and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He also received a master's degree from Duke University. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

He was a forester and retired from the Woodland Division of International Paper Co. in 1983. He taught forestry for a number of years at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. He also was the owner of Rare Wood Originals, which sold redwood tables, clocks, and lamps.

He was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6444 and the Pine Tree Club. He was a former Cub Scout leader and Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Hanson Ray, of Georgetown; two sons, Philip L. Ray Jr. of Germany and Timothy Patrick Ray of Darlington; a daughter, Mary Lou Ray Gilleland of Georgetown; nine grandchildren, including David Gilleland of Georgetown and Tabitha Ray Gilleland of Columbia; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Michael E. Ray.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dr. J. Ben Sloan will officiate.
