Robert Smith Obituary

SUMTER | Robert B. Smith passed away at NHC Healthcare in Sumter, Saturday, September 5, 2009.

Born August 16, 1923 in Franklin County, Georgia, he was the son of the late William B. and Ruth Wood Smith.

Mr. Smith graduated from Townville High School, Townville, and served in the Merchant Marines, Atlantic and Pacific War Zones, 1946-1948. He retired in 1987 after 30 years with GTE. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, West Congregation, Lynam Road, Sumter, S.C.

Mr. Smith was the last surviving sibling being preceded in death by six brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 59 years, Ruth Elizabeth Rush Smith; and his children, Robert Gerald (Betty) Smith of Myrtle Beach, Deborah Smith Neal of St. Cloud, Fla., Nathan Clay (Jay) Smith of Rougemont, N.C., Cynthia Smith Klenke of Jocotepec, Jalisco, Mexico, and Terry Lee (Carly) Smith of Longs; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted by Victor H. Jackson 2 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, SC, (803) 775-7500.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2009 at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith's family wishes to convey their deepest appreciation to the following doctors and staff for their excellent care and kindness through the years and in recent weeks. John R.
