Donald Thomas Bednar of Streator, Illinois passed away on September 28th, 2021 at the age of 90. After several months of declining health, Don passed away peacefully with his beloved wife Claudette and his 4 children at his home in Streator.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 11, 2021 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.
Visitation will be from 3-6 P.M. Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 5:45 P.M.
Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Streator. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
He was born on October 9, 1930. Don was a graduate of Streator High School in 1948 and then enlisted in the US Navy where he served on the USS Coral Sea. He married Claudette Lechner in 1952 and they raised 4 children. Diane Flynn of Tampa, Florida, (James), Barbara Stevens Mefferd (Don) of Streator, David (Sharon English) of Sunset SC, and Jacqueline Killian (Patrick) of Wheaton, Illinois.
Don worked for Commonwealth Edison for 35 years and retired in 1987 as the Southern Division General Foreman. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Knight of Columbus, and the Elks Club. He was active in the St. Mary's Grade School Sports program during his children's grade school years.
Preceding him in death were his parents Mary (Harcharik) Bednar and Thomas Bednar, his sister Mary Ann Jones, brother-in-law Bill Jones, sister Delores Laue, brother-in-law Don Laue, brother-in-law Ralph Feken, brother Bernard Bednar and sister-in-law Joyce Bednar and brother-in-law Ron Gengenbacher.
Surviving him are his wife of 68 years and children, and 8 grand and 5 great grandchildren- Brett Stevens (Ransom) Brad Stevens (Tonopah, AZ) Brian Stevens (Chicago) Stefanie Bednar ( Denver) Brendan Killian (St Louis) Kevin Killian (Chicago) Bridget Killian (Iowa City, IA) and Sean Killian (Wheaton). Great grandchildren are Cade Stevens, Riley Stevens, Kinsley Stevens (Ransom) Ava Stevens and Vaughn Stevens (Tonopah, AZ). Also surviving are a sister Alice Feken now of Madison, WI and brother Ron Bednar of Sacramento, California, sister-in-law Donna Sabol (Richard) of Streator, sister-in-law Carol Dzurisin Brockman (Glen) ( Ottawa) and sister-in-law Doris Gengenbacker (Ron) of Streator. Don was close with 18 nieces and nephews on both the Lechner and Bednar sides of the family.
Don loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and especially storytelling. He will be missed by his loving family.
