John Novotney Obituary

John "Jack" Novotney, Jr.
Born: November 5, 1947 in Streator, IL.
Died: April 22, 2025 in St. Louis, MO.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Raymond Novotney, Jr. (Jack), beloved son of John and Marcy, devoted father, and cherished friend to many.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 29th at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator.
Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Monday, April 28th at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. The rosary will be recited at 6:45 P.M.
Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Streator.
Jack is survived by Mary Jo (wife of 44 years), his sister Patricia (Rhynes), his five children and their spouses: Jesse (Rosamar), Jayme (Megan), Jon (Jen), Justin (Andrea), and his one and only princess, Stefana (Michael) as well as 13 grandchildren and lifelong friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the lessons he passed down-often with a laugh and a sparkle in his eye.
A dedicated Civil Engineer for over 50 years, he worked for Illinois Department of Transportation, Renwick Engineering, McClure Engineering, and IMEG. He built more than roads and bridges across multiple counties and states-he built relationships, opportunities, and a lasting impact on the communities he served.
Rooted in his Catholic faith, Jack was an active member of St. Patrick's Parish, where he found fellowship and purpose in giving back. He had a passion for teaching and an even greater joy in helping others learn something new. Over the years, he taught hundreds to ski-whether on water, cross-country trails, or downhill slopes. He also spent countless hours coaching, teaching, and sharing his love of movement, camaraderie, and fun.
His sense of humor was unforgettable-quick-witted, warm-hearted, and sometimes just a bit mischievous. He made people laugh when they needed it most and never missed an opportunity to lighten a heavy moment.
Jack lived a life filled with service, adventure, and love. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever celebrated.

I am so sad to hear this. I will remember him for his humor and one of the best "host dads" to his foreign exchange students

My heart goes out to the family. Jack was a GOD sent to the Village of Grand Ridge. We won't have been able to accomplish what the village did without Jack. I had all intentions to attend the wake and funeral but I came down with COVID. Jack will be missed by so many not only his engineering knowledge but also, as a friend. Kay Hines

I´m so sorry that Jack has passed. He was one of the most caring and most willing to help guys I ever knew. During my time in La Salle Co we were the best of friends. I´ll never forget how we met and found our mutual love for waterskiing. We shared a lot of laughs and a few tears during those years.
We all have a hole left in us without Jack.
My prayers are with you, Mary Jo, and with your wonderful family.

I´ve known Jack from my many years of renting cross-country skis at Mathiassen park, plus having him work on my skis as well. I loved visiting with him about our shared love of nature & introducing others, especially youth, to cross- country skiing. It was obvious to me that Jack was a "good man" in all respects, & I am saddened to lose a friend.
